PHL listed among DDOS Sources for 2011: Kaspersky Lab Reports

The Philippines breaks in the chart as among the 23 countries worldwide that contributed to 90 percent of all DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks in the second half of 2011, according to a recent report by Kaspersky Lab, a leading secure content and threat management solutions developer.

Banks Directed: Keep ATMs Full

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. in a memo reminded all banks to make sure that automated teller machines (ATM) will have funds to service withdrawal transactions this coming five-day Lent, and public holidays.

"As people flock to the provinces during long holidays like Lenten Season, demand for ATM service is expected to surge," said Espenilla. "Banks are therefore reminded to keep their ATM facility ready 24x7 and undertake ATM preparedness program."

Lights Out At 8:30-9:30 p.m.

Millions of Filipinos are expected to participate in Earth Hour, the event that encourages the simultaneous switching off of lights and other electrical appliances to raise global awareness on climate change, at 8:30-9:30 p.m. today in the Philippines.

Former actor now a pastor

Former Quezon City representative Dennis Roldan (real name Mitchell Gumabao), who first gained notice in the '80s as a basketball player and actor, is now a pastor.

Roldan made the big reveal in a recent interview, saying that he decided on his new vocation after spending two years in jail for his alleged participation in the kidnapping of a Chinese boy in 2005.

Guyabano: Miracle Cure For Cancer?

Guyabano is the Filipino term for the graviola tree (Annona reticulate). Its delectable fruitis also locally referred to as guyabano but is known as custard apple or sour sop in English.

Folklore attributes some medicinal properties to guyabano. Supposedly, its unripe fruit can relieve diarrhea, its leaves can eliminate worms when taken internally and heal wounds when applied topically, and a concoction of its roots can reduce fever.

Public utility jeepneys (PUJs) operating in the National Capital Region and Regions 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 will start charging a minimum fare of P8.50 Wednesday, after the government granted Tuesday the provisional fare increase petitions of transport operators.

Five regions of the country are not covered by the fare hike. In the seven-page decision, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) reinstated the former minimum jeepney fare of P8.50 after weeks of public consultations and deliberations.

699 Pass Engineer Licensure Examinations

500 New Fairytales Discovered In Germany

A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light with the discovery of 500 new fairytales, which were locked away in an archive in Regensburg, Germany for over 150 years.

Cancer gene mutation more complex than previously thought: study

Taking a sample or biopsy from just one part of a tumor might not give a full picture of its genetic diversity and may explain why doctors, despite using genetically targeted drugs, are often unable to save patients whose cancer has spread, scientists said.

A study by British researchers found there are more genetic differences than similarities between biopsies taken from separate areas of the same tumor, and yet further gene differences in samples taken from secondary tumors.

Stop corporal punishment, Lim tells Manila teachers

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim warned teachers from public schools in the city to refrain from inflicting harm or employing corporal punishment on their students.

Lim’s pronouncement came after the parents of at least 23 students from the Almario Elementary School in Tondo trooped to the office of Manila Department of Social Welfare chief Jay Dela Fuente to seek help regarding alleged abuses committed by a school teacher against their children.

Grace Lee resigns from radio show

Popular Korean TV and radio personality Grace Lee has resigned from her morning show on radio station Magic 89.9 reports said.

Lee herself confirmed this in a series of tweets with one post saying that she intends to formally say goodbye to fans of the show, “Good Times” on Thursday.

The Tillandsia is a strange grass-like air-plant. Its genus name was dedicated to Swedish botanist Elias Tillands (1640-1693). There are more than 500 species of Tillandsia, and they are native from the north to the mid-Atlantic region of the United States and as well as South America. The Tillandsias is a relative of the bromeliad and pineapple plants which belong to the Bromeliaceae plant family.
