Divorce Won't Pass 15th Congress


House leaders said Monday that the passage of the “Filipino-style” divorce bill will not happen in the 15th Congress. Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. and House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales II said that while the House leadership moved for the termination of the debates on the highly-divisive Reproductive Health (RH) bill, it is not keen on approving House Bill 1799 or “An Act Introducing Divorce in the Philippines.”

Divorce Bill


One of the principal authors of the "Filipino-style" divorce bill is not giving up the battle to have the measure approved.
Gabriela party-list Rep. Luz Ilagan, who authored House Bill 1799 along with Rep. Emmie de Jesus, said they would continue to drum up interest in the measure, which is still pending in the House Committee on Revision of Laws.

Philippine Congress set to tackle divorce bill

As it deliberates on the Reproductive Health bill in plenary, the House of Representatives is likewise about to start working on another controversial measure on Wednesday: the proposed Divorce Bill of the Philippines.

Gabriel party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan made the announcement right after Malta voted in a referendum to pass a divorce law—giving the Philippines the distinction of being the only country outside of the Vatican City without a divorce law.
