Chatting On Your Cell Phone May Boost Brain Metabolism

The concerns about the health impacts of cellphone use are likely to resurface today with the publication of a study in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study doesn't uncover any health risks associated with cellphone use, but it does indicate that holding a phone to one's head for an extended call seems to be enough to boost the brain's metabolic rate. The boost, however, is smaller than that seen in the visual system when it's processing images.

Rotting Apple: One of the Best Time-Lapse Videos of Nature at Work

The world is filled with sluggish spectacles. Watching them would be painful were it not for time-lapse photography, which can make those long stories short and remarkably entertaining.

Can Cola Coloring Cause Cancer?

A major consumer group today called for a government ban on two types of caramel coloring used in colas, warning that the ingredients could cause cancer. The soft drink industry came out swinging, strongly objecting to the claim.

The National Toxicology program tested a contaminant in the coloring and found that it caused cancer in mice and possibly rats.

According to the CSPI, pure caramel is made by heating sugar, while the coloring found in cola like Pepsi and Coca-Cola is made by reacting sugars with ammonia. Jacobson said the chemicals the reaction produces have been proven by federal government tests to be carcinogens, a finding that the Coca-Cola Company vehemently disputes.

How to Convert Fat-32 to NTFS

These are file systems for disc partitions that are present in computers running on Windows XP. NTFS, short for NT File System has been recommended by Microsoft itself, and is said to be the more powerful of the two file systems. It includes some features like the use of B-tree Directory to keep track of file clusters, and the fact that it can support very-large files. Its security measures are also an improvement on earlier file systems. FAT-32 is an earlier version of the file system. Before converting, one is advised to spend some time to learn the benefits of both systems, and since conversion takes a little bit of time, your needs should be the ones to determine which system should be embraced. Why Do We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

We celebrate Valentine's Day, because until 1969, it was one of the many Saint's Days observed by the Catholic Church. It was dedicated to the patron saint of romantic causes, St. Valentine.

Although it was removed from the Church's calendar in 1969, the religious meaning coupled with Valentine's Day's roots in Roman paganism have allowed it to continue as a holiday for everyone.

Early Christians saw Valentine's Day as a way to honor St. Valentine, of whom there were actually three. The Catholic Church recognizes three saints by that name, all who were martyred on February 14.

Apple iPad 2 Now in Production

Apple’s production partners are already hard at work on the new model of iPad, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The fact that Apple is working on an iPad 2, of course, is common knowledge. The famously tight-lipped company rarely talks about upcoming product launches, and isn’t talking now. But Apple has never denied that it intends to follow up on one of its most successful products.

Nearly $5 billion worth of iPads have been sold in the three quarters since its launch. And a quick glance at the history of the iPhone, which launches a new model every year, suggests that we should expect to see the iPad 2 right around the first anniversary of its predecessor’s launch: April 3, 2011.

Tips on how to keep your computer virus-free

The Internet presents an opportunity for viruses to attack any unsuspecting user. For a naïve user, it would be difficult to discern a virus as it comes in many forms: installers, Trojans, and worms, among others.

Below are some tips that will help reduce the risk of your computer getting infected by a virus:
  • Browse with caution – Most viruses enter your computer as a result of clicking on pop-ups or untrustworthy website links.
  • Open emails cautiously – Even if the subject seems harmless, emails can contain links that lead to a virus entering the computer. If the email is from a source that you do not know, treat it with extra caution.
  • Install or download clean programs – Download programs and files only from a trusted source.

I wonder what makes iPv4 different from iPv6. I came across this site from Mashable which is the answer to my query.

Here it goes...

The Internet has run out of Internet addresses… sort of. Perhaps you’ve heard the news: the last blocks of IPv4 Internet addresses have been allocated. The fundamental underlying technology that has powered Internet Protocol addresses (ever seen a number like on the web? That’s an IP address) since the Internet’s inception will soon be exhausted.

Mona Lisa Model was a Male?

Italian researchers who specialize in resolving art mysteries said they have discovered the disputed identity of the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa – and claimed he was a man.

Silvano Vinceti, chairman of the Italian national committee for cultural heritage, said the Florence-born Renaissance artist's male apprentice and possible lover Salai was the main inspiration for the picture.

However his claim was immediately disputed by experts at the Louvre in Paris, where the painting is on display.

Salai, real name Gian Giacomo Caprotti, an effeminate young artist who worked with da Vinci for 25 years, is thought to have served as a model and muse for several of his paintings. The pair had an "ambiguous" relationship and were probably lovers, Vinceti said.

G-slate: LG's First Tablet to Hit the US Market in March

LG Electronics said Wednesday it would release its first tablet computer in the United States in March as it prepares to go head to head with Apple's iPad.

LG said the G-slate was among the first tablet models to run on the "Honeycomb" operating system, which is Google's latest generation of Android platforms designed for mobile devices with large screens.

The G-slate features a 8.9-inch screen, smaller than the iPad's nearly 10-inch display but larger than the seven-inch screen of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab. LG did not give a price for the new gadget.

The world's third-largest handset maker said the release date for the G-slate's global release would be disclosed later this month.

Tips on Downloading Video and Audio Files

A lot of people download music or video through a free peer-2-peer (P2P) file sharing program such as LimeWire. But get the facts right by researching on how P2P programs work, and learn about the different ways to download safe, virus-free music files online.

This is a general guide to safe downloads especially that viruses may be embedded in files commonly found in file-sharing programs:
  • Before downloading a file, ignore the star count rating next to the file. Many people who share or rate files do not know they had been infected with a virus.

iTunes and Free Download Services

In this age of file sharing, it is no longer a common to see people buy CDs in record stores to listen to their favorite bands and songs. They just go online.Be it iTunes or free music and video downloading sites, the hunt is on for the safest, most affordable way to get that most-wanted tune.

What’s on the iTunes Store? There are millions of songs here from most of the artists, albums or genre anyone can think of. There are thousands of movies to buy or rent, television shows to keep, and web applications and games to download. There are more than 150,000 free audio and video podcasts, and a lot of best-selling audiobooks too.

How Computer Viruses Work

A computer virus is a program that reproduces by attaching itself to another program or document. Similar to a biological virus, the virus has a code which is executed when the infected program is run.
This is the general way most viruses work:
  • When an infected program or file is opened, the computer virus attached to it is automatically activated.
  • The virus modifies a computer program’s code so when a user starts the program, the virus code runs instead of the normal code.
  • The moment the virus code becomes activated, the computer will then be under its full control.
  • The virus aims to replicate and spread. Thus, it naturally looks for prospective targets to infect.
