DOLE Pushes Short-Term Courses

Students who want to get employment fast might want to consider getting short-term courses on food and beverage.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, in a statement, said students who were not able to enroll in tertiary education should consider looking into the short-term food and beverage (F&B) courses that are available in many technical-vocational schools in the country such as those for waiters and waitresses, baristas, bartenders, cooks, and kitchen helpers.

Pinoy Nurses Told Not To Expect US Hiring Till 2020

Filipino nurses may have difficulty entering the US labor market until 2020, a member of the Philippine Congress said.

“The shortage of nurses in America ended in 2010. Right now, they have ample supply of US-educated nurses,” said Rep. Arnel Ty, of the sectoral party LPG-MA, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers' Association.

Citing statistics from America's National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Ty said America produced close to a million nurses from 2006 to 2011.

The Department of Labor and Employment with the participation of several private companies is currently implementing provisions of RA. 7323 entitled, “An Act to Help Poor But Deserving Students Pursue their Education By Encouraging their Employment During Summer and/or Christmas Vacations.” Under this law, employers pay only sixty percent (60%) of their salaries while the 40% is shouldered by the government and paid through Edu-cation Vouchers.

Switzerland Opens Doors To Nurses

The Philippines is working with Swiss government authorities on the entry of Filipino nurses as trainees to Switzerland where Filipino health care workers who arrived in the European country in the 1970s are well regarded.

Philippine Ambassador to Switzerland Leslie Baja and Federal Office of Migration Director Mario Gattiker recently started discussions on the intensification of the entry into Switzerland of Filipino professional and technical trainees, including nurses, under a bilateral agreement.

K-To-12 'Does Not Assure Work'

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said on Thursday that while the curriculum for the Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program will be sufficient to prepare students for work, it is not an “assurance” that the graduates will have jobs after six years of high school.

“We don’t want to give false hopes or empty promises,” said Luistro in an interview. “Assurance of job is not just a function of the Department of Education (DepEd) but also of the students themselves and the environment,” he said.

More Therapists Needed In US

Qualified Filipino physical therapists – both male and female – will be having more opportunities abroad as the United States admitted that its demand for therapists will continue to rise in the next four years.

Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the demand for physical therapists has been increasing by 27 percent since 2006. This upward trend is expected to continue until 2016.

PAL service provider now hiring

The service provider of flag carrier Philippine Airlines is in a mass hiring mode with 1800 job openings for ground handling and customer service agent positions. This was announced Thursday by SkyLogistics and SkyKitchens president Rory Jon Sepulveda who said they need to fill the posts vacated by former PAL Employee Association (PALEA) members who went on a wildcat strike last week.

Filipino nurses should look for jobs in Saudi Arabia, according to the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP).

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer has emerged as the most aggressive recruiter of Filipino nurse practitioners, outpacing the United States, said TUCP secretary-general and former Senator Ernesto Herrera.

In-Demand and Hard-to-Fill Jobs in the Philippines

What jobs are in-demand and hard-to-fill in the Philippines and abroad this 2011 and in the next 10 years?

The Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) has announced a list of 108 “in-demand and hard-to-fill” occupations that need workers within the next 10 years.

The list was created based on findings of the DOLE’s latest labor market study under its “Project Jobsfit” program.
