Education Different Next School Year

Education as most Filipinos know it will be different next school year, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said over the weekend, referring to the changes in the education curriculum for the upcoming implementation of the K+12 beginning June this year.

Speaking before hundreds of elementary and high school teachers from regions 1, 2, 3 and the Cordillera Administrative Region, Luistro said the educational system has been changed to make it more adaptable to students according to their localities, preference in learning, and in their career options.

DepEd issues student summer employment guidelines

The Department of Education’s Center for Students and Co-Curricular Affairs (CSCA) has come out with an application procedure to guide students who want to apply for the 2012 Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES). There are 150 slots opened by the DepEd Central Office to accommodate qualified student applicants for this program.

K-To-12 'Does Not Assure Work'

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said on Thursday that while the curriculum for the Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program will be sufficient to prepare students for work, it is not an “assurance” that the graduates will have jobs after six years of high school.

“We don’t want to give false hopes or empty promises,” said Luistro in an interview. “Assurance of job is not just a function of the Department of Education (DepEd) but also of the students themselves and the environment,” he said.

DepEd drops 'Science' for pupils

The Department of Education (DepEd) has decided to drop “Science” from the roster of subjects taken up by incoming Grade 1 pupils in line with its efforts to decongest the Basic Education Curriculum and to make learning more enjoyable to young learners.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that the move to exclude Science in Grade 1 subjects starting this coming school year is based on the design of K to 12 curriculum. “The overall design of the new curriculum to be introduced and implemented this coming June to both Grade 1 and First Year high school students is based on the idea that we should be taking the students where they are,” Luistro said in an interview.

Shorter hours for Grade 1

Education Secretary Armin Luistro announced Monday that incoming Grade 1 pupils for the school year 2012 to 2013 will be spending shorter hours in school—from six contact hours to only four hours—to make education “less stressful” and “more enjoyable” for the young learners.

The new class schedule was based on the implementation of the new curriculum for Grade 1 pupils as part of the launch of DepEd’s Enhanced K- to-12 Basic education program this coming school year.

'Real revolution' in education seen

The Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday the “real revolution” in Philippine education is set to unfold this coming school year 2012 to 2013 with the introduction of the new curricula for Grade 1 and first year high school students.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said a more “learner-centered” curriculum for elementary and a “more interactive” curriculum for high school aim to change the mindset of the students when it comes to going to school and learning, in general.

DepEd working round the clock to ensure 100% release of Christmas bonus before December 25

Public school teachers have started getting their Productivity Enhancement Incentive (PEI) as the Department of Education (DepEd) continues to monitor its regional offices nationwide to ensure that teachers receive theirs in time for the holiday season. The P10,000 PEI is commonly referred to as the Christmas bonus.
