2 Earthquakes In Iran Kill 220

Two powerful earthquakes killed 220 people and injured around 1,500 in northwest Iran where rescue workers frantically combed the rubble of dozens of villages throughout the night and into Sunday as medical staff desperately tried to save lives.

Thousands huddled in makeshift camps or slept in the streets afte Saturday’s quakes in fear of more aftershocks, 40 of which have already struck.

Small Tsunami Hits Japan After 6.8-Magnitude Quake

One month after a strong tremor jolted Negros Oriental, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Masbate City early Tuesday morning causing injuries to at least eight people. Authorities said one building collapsed while several structures suffered minor cracks following the quake.

6.9 Magnitude Quake Jolts Negros Oriental

A strong earthquake measuring 6.9-magnitude on the Richter scale jolted Negros Oriental shortly before noon Monday that was felt in some parts of the country, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to issue tsunami alert over the affected areas.

The earthquake was recorded at 11:49 a.m. Monday with its epicenter located 10 km northwest of Negros Oriental.

PCG Issues Warning Following Tsunami Alert

In view of the tsunami alert level 2 warning issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) due to the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit the Negros Province, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) issued a warning and notice mariners to all maritime vessels passing through the vicinity of the said area and nearby provinces.

Eastern Visayas hit by 5.9-magnitude earthquake

A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.9-magnitude on the Richter scale jolted parts of Eastern Visayas Tuesday evening and was followed by a weak tremor Wednesday.

 

The tremor was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday that originated 55 kilometers (km) northeast of Mercedes, Eastern Samar.

Quake Moves Japan Closer to U.S.

Geophysicists found that global positioning stations near the quake's epicenter moved as far as 13 feet eastward! This does not mean that the entire country shifted, but that the nation has actually grown wider. NASA scientists have also found that the earthquake may have shorted the length of the day by a couple of milliseconds and shifted the Earth's axis!

Experts say that there are steps everyone should take to be prepared and stay safe during and after a quake. Here are ten tips to keep in mind:

1. Have an Emergency Kit You may be on your own after a quake, as emergency services like police and firefighters may be unable to help. The USGS recommends a fire extinguisher, backup medications, a first-aid kit, crescent and pipe wrenches to turn off gas and water lines, flashlights and a portable radio, among other supplies. Be sure to have enough water for each family member for two weeks, at least 1 gallon per person per day.

Lady Gaga Donates $750K To Zynga’s Japan Earthquake Relief Campaign

On Friday, social gaming giant Zynga joined tsunami relief efforts by enabling in-game donations through virtual goods in Zynga games like FrontierVille, FarmVille and CityVille. Today, the company announced that — in just 36 hours — Zynga gamers donated more than $1 million to relief efforts.

Zynga partnered with the Save the Children to raise money for its Japan Earthquake Tsunami Children Emergency Fund.

Zynga representatives said that the campaign was created in under 24 hours and is the largest charitable campaign in company history. It is also the first CityVille Zynga.org campaign.
