Search is on for Batang Tesda

Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has come up with a new recognition for its outstanding youth graduates in technical education and skills development (TESD).

The TESDA Best, Batang TESDA 2012 Award has been launched to find the best among TESD graduates who are not over 30 years old and have attained the skills excellence and success in their chosen trade careers.

TESDA has two existing institutional awards for outstanding skilled workers and technicians and partners in skills development. These are the Idol ng TESDA Award and the Kabalikat Award. However, no such recognition has ever been given to successful young workers.

Olympic Torch Cheered Through London

The Olympic flame took a festive, valedictory lap around London on Thursday, taking in some of the sun-drenched capital's most famous landmarks and getting a royal welcome on the second-to-last day of its trek across Britain.

Apple Releases OS X 10.8

Apple released to the public on Thursday its next-generation operating system (OS) – OS X 10.8, code-named Mountain Lion (ML).

Prior to the official public release, Apple had a preview of the next-generation OS a few months ago.

The features were presented to the public, but the actual preview or beta release was made available exclusively to OS X developers. Fortunately, I am listed as one of the developers so I was able to get the first beta release of Mountain Lion (ML). However, the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) between Apple and developers with beta access prevented me from writing about ML features that were not presented to the public.

The Quezon City division of city schools has authorized some public schools to suspend classes on Monday to ease traffic congestion when President Aquino delivers his third State of the Nation Address (SONA). F.D.A. Approves Qsymia, a Weight-Loss Drug

What was once a no-man’s-land is about to become a pharmaceutical battleground.

The Food and Drug Administration approved a second new weight-loss drug on Tuesday, expanding the range of medical options for the one-third of American adults who are obese.

The drug, Qsymia, offered the greatest weight loss in clinical trials of the three diet drugs that have been considered by the F.D.A. in recent years. But it also raises the risk of birth defects if used by pregnant women and can cause elevated heart rates and cognitive problems.

Delta passenger thought needle was a toothpick

Jim Tonjes was high above North America when he bit into a hot turkey sandwich aboard a Delta Air Lines flight and felt a sudden jab in his mouth.

Glancing down, he noticed what looked like a sewing needle in the food. Another passenger on the plane reported the same thing.

At first, he thought a toothpick meant to hold the sandwich together had punctured the roof of his mouth. When he pulled it out, "it was a straight needle, about one inch long, with sharp points on both ends."

Thinner Screen For Next iPhone

POEA Regulations

Recruitment agencies should not collect excessive placement fees from applicants or charge placement fees from workers seeking employment in countries which have laws that prohibit the same, if they don’t want to lose their license, said the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said there is total prohibition on charging placement fees from Filipino household service workers, seafarers, and workers for deployment to countries which disallows placement fee collection.

Yahoo Breach Exposes Over 400,000 Users, Passwords

More than 400,000 Yahoo Inc. user names and passwords were stolen and published on the Web, putting other websites at risk as well, after hackers exploited a vulnerability in Yahoo’s computer systems.

Some logins for Google Inc., AOL Inc and Microsoft Corp. services were among those compromised. The three companies said they required affected users to reset passwords for sites including Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, MSN and Live.com.

TESDA sets National Assessment

A batch of at least 60, 000 skilled workers and technicians will be added to the registry of certified workers or ‘specialistas’ as TESDA holds a nationwide skills assessment and certification starting this month.

The second National TVET Competency Assessment and Certification (NATCAC) will be held nationwide on three separate dates starting July 9. TVET trainers and returning overseas Filipino workers are also expected to sit for the competency assessment.

Education Gets Biggest Budget Allocation

The Department of Education (DepEd) gets the biggest allocation in the proposed P2.006-trillion national budget for 2013 as the Aquino administration aims to solve the shortage in teachers and classrooms by next year, according to Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad.

The DepEd gets P292.7 billion for 2013, or P55.9-billion more than its P238.8-billion budget this year.

Denise Rich, the wealthy socialite and former wife of pardoned billionaire trader Marc Rich, has given up her US citizenship – and, with it, much of her US tax bill.

Rich, 68, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and glossy figure in Democratic and European royalty circles, renounced her American passport in November, according to her lawyer.

Her maiden name, Denise Eisenberg, appeared in the Federal Register on April 30 in a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. citizenship and permanent residents who handed in their green cards.

TV anchor Karen Davila also confirmed the report in a Tweet quoting Padilla Tuesday night.

Miss Wisconsin Teen USA 2012 title-holder Briana Yamat, 14, is getting ready to compete in this year’s Miss Teen USA pageant, the junior edition of Miss USA.

Trillanes seeks to hike teachers’ pay

SENATOR Antonio “Sonny” F. Trillanes IV has filed a bill seeking to raise the minimum pay of public school teachers to salary grade 20 or equivalent to P36,567.00 per month.

The proposed salary grade is in accordance with the 4th tranche of the implementation of the Salary Standardization Law scheduled this month. At present, the basic salary of public school teachers is pegged at grade 11 or about P18,549.00 a month.

WHO: Children’s Deaths In Cambodia Linked To Hand, Foot, Mouth Virus

Health experts working to identify an illness that has killed dozens of children in Cambodia found a link to a virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease, the UN health agency said Monday.

At least 52 children aged three months to 11 years have died from the undiagnosed syndrome since mid-April, out of 59 cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Cambodian health ministry said, updating the toll.

Dogs May Protect Babies From Some Infections: Study

Babies who spend time around pet dogs have fewer ear infections and respiratory ailments than those whose homes are animal-free, said a study released on Monday.

The study, published in the US journal Pediatrics, did not say why but suggested that being around a dog that spends at least part of its day outdoors may boost a child's immune system in the first year of life.

China Banking Corporation has teamed up with BancNet and Mabuhay Taxi, one of Davao City’s biggest taxi fleet operators for an innovative cashless fare payment system.

Unrelenting Heat Wave Bakes Half The US; 30 Dead

Americans dipped into the water, went to the movies, and rode the subway just to be in air conditioning Saturday for relief from unrelenting heat that has killed at least 30 people across half the country.

The heat sent temperatures soaring over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in several cities, including a record 105 F (40.5 C) in Washington, St. Louis (106 F, 41 C), and Indianapolis (104 F, 40 C), buckled highways, and derailed a Washington-area train as another round of summer storms threatened.

Hajj Listing Until July 16

If you are a Muslim and intend to perform the pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in October, 2012, you only have until July 16 to register with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF).

The Commission earlier asked the Saudi Ministry of Hajj for a quota of 6,000 hajj visas. NCMF is required to inform the Saudi ministry of the actual number of paid pilgrims after the cut-off date.

K To 12 Model Schools To Get P1-M Subsidy

Education Secretary Armin Luistro announced Thursday that 12 Senior High School (SHS) model schools under the K to 12 Basic Education Program of the Department of Education (DepEd) will each be provided P1-million each subsidy.

Luistro said the financial assistance to the 12 technical vocational secondary schools that will model K to 12’s SHS Program would help the recipient schools in efficiently implementing the program that debuted when classes opened in June this year.

CA Junks Hayden Kho’s Petition To Overturn License Revocation

Controversial personality Hayden Kho, Jr. has had to deal with a definitive blow in his career as the Court of Appeals (CA) affirmed the revocation of his professional license by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

In a 17-page resolution authored by Associate Justice Edwin Sorongon dated June 29, abs-cbnNEWS.com quoted on Wednesday that the appellate court’s eighth division has scrapped Kho’s appeal to reverse the PRC decision on Aug. 22, 2011 regarding his license, following the administrative case lodged against him.
