Mutya Beauties Crowned

Pampanga beauty Camille Guevarra brought home the top title Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 Asia-Pacific International at the Grand Coronation Night on Sunday HELD at the UP Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.

The 19-year-old crowd favorite, whose couturier also won the Best Designer award,  will represent the country in the upcoming Miss Intercontinental beauty contest to be held in Spain in December.

Mutya 2012 Candidates Unveiled

Most of the candidates in this year’s Mutya ng Pilipinas are first-timers in beauty contests.

While other beauty contests are known to include candidates who have joined other beauty contests in the past, Mutya ng Pilipinas scoured the country to unearth new faces, says fashion designer and Mutya project designer Renee Salud in an interview with Bulletin Entertainment and select members of media during the press presentation at the Midas Hotel, Manila on July 18.

Pinay Teen To Compete In ‘Miss Teen USA’

Miss Wisconsin Teen USA 2012 title-holder Briana Yamat, 14, is getting ready to compete in this year’s Miss Teen USA pageant, the junior edition of Miss USA.

“I could not believe it. It was one of those moments that you just… you don’t believe it.  You just know that your life is about to change like this,” Briana gushed in a report on “ANC,” July 9.

Briana was born in the US but her grandparents hail from Pampanga. The report noted that her mom was a former beauty queen who now acts as her pageant coach.

Local Beauty Queens Oppose Miss Universe Ruling To Accept Transgender Beauties

Ma. Isabel Lopez and Miriam Quiambao, representatives of the Philippines to the Miss Universe pageant in 1982 and 1999 respectively, voiced out their opposition to the Miss Universe Organization’s recent decision to allow “women who are transgender” to compete beginning next year.

The policy change was announced in a joint statement by The Gay & Lesbian Alli¬ance Against Defa¬mation (GLAAD) and the Miss Universe Orga¬nization in the US on April 10, a week after the almost 60-year-old pageant went under fire for disquali¬fying transgender Miss Universe-Canada hopeful Jenna Talackova to the com¬petition to be held on May 19, and eventually reinstating her “provided she meets the legal gender recogni¬tion requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”

Binibing Pilipinas winners share two cents on language preference in Q&As

The top five winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2012 offer various perspectives on criticisms that some of the pageant contestants have poor command of English.

Social networking sites were filled with such negative comments more than a week ago, during the Binibining Pilipinas Coronation Night, where all the 12 semi-finalists noticeably used English during the Question and Answer portion. One of the judges, Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, spokesperson of the Akbayan party-list, read her question to a candidate both in English and in Filipino. The contestant, however, opted to respond in the universal language.

Bb. Pilipinas Now Open To Transgenders

The Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI), which sends representatives to the Miss Universe beauty pageant every year, said Thursday it will respect the decision of the Miss Universe Organization to allow transgenders to compete starting next year.

“We respect the decision of the Miss Universe Organization to change its policy regarding transgender participation in the pageant. At the moment, however, we are still awaiting the guidelines of this policy decision from the Miss Universe Organization,’’ said Tessa Mangahas, Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager of Araneta Center, Inc.

Filipino Teens Compete In Mr. And Ms. Teen Tourism Universe In Guatemala

Two teenagers will represent the country in the Mr. and Miss Teen Tourism Universe contest in Guatemala on October 2, 2012.

Rohama Rearte and Aljohn Lucas earned the right to represent the Philippines in the contest after they won the Mr. and Ms. Olive-C Campus Model held at the Ynares Sports Complex in Pasig City on Jan. 28, 2012. Both are high school students.
