Miriam Quiambao apologizes to LGBT community over remarks on homosexuality and religion

Former beauty queen Miriam Quiambao extended her apology to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community after her statements on “The Bottomline,” Saturday night, were met by negative reactions from a number of netizens.

“I'm sorry LGBT. Perhaps I was too harsh with the words I used. Will do my best to be more sensitive. #respect #nobodysperfect #grace,” the 1999 Miss Universe first runner-up posted on Twitter the evening of April 28.

Local Beauty Queens Oppose Miss Universe Ruling To Accept Transgender Beauties

Ma. Isabel Lopez and Miriam Quiambao, representatives of the Philippines to the Miss Universe pageant in 1982 and 1999 respectively, voiced out their opposition to the Miss Universe Organization’s recent decision to allow “women who are transgender” to compete beginning next year.

The policy change was announced in a joint statement by The Gay & Lesbian Alli¬ance Against Defa¬mation (GLAAD) and the Miss Universe Orga¬nization in the US on April 10, a week after the almost 60-year-old pageant went under fire for disquali¬fying transgender Miss Universe-Canada hopeful Jenna Talackova to the com¬petition to be held on May 19, and eventually reinstating her “provided she meets the legal gender recogni¬tion requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”

Former Venezuelan beauty queen dead at 28

Eva Ekvall, former Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe third runner-up, finally succumbed to her almost two year-long battle with breast cancer.

The Associated Press (AP) reported on Dec. 20 that the Venezuelan beauty queen passed away in a hospital in Houston, Texas last Saturday. She had a two-year old daughter with husband, radio producer John Fabio Bermudez.

New beauty queen anti-nukes

Newly-crowned 2011 Miss Philippines Earth opposed last Saturday night the idea of using nuclear power in the country as an alternative source energy, saying that it may be harmful to the country.

At the grand coronation night of the environment-driven beauty contest in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Athena Mae Imperial of Casiguran, Aurora, said that the country should instead focus on hydroelectric, solar and grid as an alternative source power.
