Sharon Cuneta Hints At Family Problem

Something has been bothering Megastar Sharon Cuneta lately and it’s apparently bigger than her online detractors.

The TV host-actress intimated about what seems to be a family problem through a series of tweets she posted on June 28.

She began with, “So much going on in my family.. I mean my Mommy, brother, & me... My tendency though I always come out strong, is really, to hide & avoid what is most painful.. I just want what's best for my Mama (Elaine Cuneta).. Ang hirap..”

Bigger Pag-IBIG Loan

Starting this month, members of Pag-IBIG or Home Development Mutual Fund can borrow as much as P6 million, double the previous loanable amount.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Darlene Marie B. Berberabe said last Friday the new loan policy was approved just last week, although Vice President and concurrent Pag-IBIG Chairman Jejomar C. Binay had revealed such development as early as March.

P35,567 Pay For Teachers Proposed

Senator Antonio “Sonny” F. Trillanes IV has proposed close to 100 percent monthly salary increase for the country’s more than 500,000 public school teachers from the current P18,549 to P35,567.

If the measure becomes a law, the government stands to spend over P18 billion a month or P219 billion a year for the public school teachers’ salaries.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) welcomed Trillanes’ proposal.

20,000 Year Old Pottery Found

Pottery fragments found in a south China cave have been confirmed to be 20,000 years old, making them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say.

The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in East Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter-gathers to farmers.

BIR Upgrades Docu Stamp Use

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has upgraded its electronic documentary stamp tax (eDST) system to facilitate the generation of the stamps used by taxpayers in selected transactions.

The upgrade consisted of changing certain policies on their usage as well as distributing the electronic machines to the agency's collection and audit offices nationwide.

The electronic gadgets were previously available only in banks authorized by the BIR to accept tax payments and at the collection service and collection programs division in the national office.

Acclaimed screenwriter Nora Ephron dead at 71

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, known for romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," as well as books and essays, has died in New York after battling leukemia. She was 71.

Ephron, who had suffered from acute myeloid leukemia, died on Tuesday evening at New York's Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center surrounded by her family, they said in a statement.

Excessive Mercury Found In 13 Products

A consumer watchdog is urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban supposed harmful skin whitening products sold in the Philippines after it found 13 of them containing excessive amounts of mercury.

Ecowaste Coalition said 13 of the 14 skin whitening products it purchased in stores in Manila and Makati Cities contained excessive levels of mercury from 550 parts per million (ppm) to 60,800 ppm in violation of the 1 ppm allowable limit under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Cosmetics Directive.

US Spares Young Illegals

The United States will stop deporting young law-abiding illegal immigrants who satisfy broad criteria, in a move that will be seen as a concession to Hispanic voters ahead of November’s election.

The scheme applies to minors brought to the United States before the age of 16, who are currently under 30, are in school or have graduated from high school, and have not been convicted of a felony, officials said.

President Barack Obama was due to make remarks on the decision, which could impact an estimated 800,000 people, in the White House Rose Garden later on Friday.

Actress Lindsay Lohan escaped injury in a major car crash on Friday after her Porsche collided with an dump truck on a Southern California highway.

Police said Lohan was driving her black Porsche with an unidentified male passenger on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica on her way to the set of her latest movie project, and collided with a dump truck.

The actress and her passenger were taken to the hospital as a precaution, and released shortly after. Neither Lohan or the driver of the truck were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.

Paul McCartney has confirmed an Olympic-sized rumor, saying he’ll be the closing act at the London 2012 opening ceremony.

Earlier this year the former Beatle disclosed that he was in talks to play a role in the celebrations.

On Monday, he confirmed: “I’ve been booked.”

He told BBC radio station 5 Live that he would be “closing the opening” of the games.

K To 12 Grading System

K-To-12 Kicks Off

For the parents of the close to 2 million children who will start kindergarten classes on Monday, the key phrase is “K-to-12.”

K-to-12 is the government’s bold new education program it is launching this school year. It re-structures the curriculum, incorporating kindergarten, six years of elementary, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school (SHS).

Parents Warned On Unlisted Schools

With the enrollment still ongoing in most private schools nationwide, the Department of Education (DepEd) warned yesterday parents and students against unaccredited schools saying that "studying in an unaccredited private school might pose a problem on student’s learning due to a possibly unauthorized curriculum."

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that all DepEd regional offices have been ordered to submit the list of names and addresses of private schools with government permit to operate as this will serve as guide for parents and students on which private schools to enroll in.

TESDA training programs go online

Students, out-of-school youths, unemployed adults, and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) need not go to a training center anymore to learn job skills, be certified and qualified for employment.
