Last-Minute Call For Overseas Filipinos To Register And Vote

With more than 50 days left before voter registration for Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) ends, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued a last-minute call to overseas Filipinos to register for the May 2013 senatorial and party-list polls.

“We are encouraging all the overseas workers to register. We have a deadline and that is on October 31,” Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes III said in an interview.

Elderly OFW Gets Gov’t Assistance

After spending the last 23 years working illegally in Saudi Arabia, a 65-year-old Filipino will finally be reunited with his family in the Philippines.

Nemesio Valencia was repatriated to Manila yesterday, a move that was arranged and facilitated by the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO).

Skills Training For UAE OFWs

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said it is now in the process of forging a new partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which will guaran¬tee skills training to overseas Filipino workers (OFW) who will be deployed to that Middle East country.

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said in an interview that UAE Ministry of Labor Saqr Gho-bash Saeed Ghobash proposed the proj¬ect during his visit last week, wherein OFWs could avail of skills training.

3 OFWs die in Beirut building

Three Filipinos were among the 26 people killed when a five-story residential building in Beirut, Lebanon collapsed Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed in a radio interview Tuesday.

Aside from the Filipinos, the victims included eight Sudanese, two Egyptians and two Jordanians, local newspaper has reported.

Lower process fees for OFWs

Overseas Filipino workers (OFW) could now expect lower process fees for their overseas employment certificate (OEC) after the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) implemented a new collection policy in its foreign posts.

POEA administrator Hans Cacdac said in a phone interview that under the new advisory, which will be effective immediately, the new process fees collected from vacationing OFWs will be much closer to its P100 processing rate for OEC.

Pokwang relates to OFW role

“A Mother’s Story” tackles the story of an undocumented Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) named Medy and her experiences in the land of opportunities, America.

Pokwang who plays Medy in the movie said she can relate to the role having been an OFW in the past. Unlike Medy, however, Pokwang was not a TNT (tago-nang-tago).
