HIV/Aids Linked To Social Media

The Department of Health (DOH) recently released a study indicating the HIV/AIDS cases are escalating and it was found that social networking is a contributing factor to this increase in HIV cases.

The study, entitled “OSN (online social network) Use and Risks for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) among men Having Sex with Men (MSM),” was done from Sept 1 t Nov. 4 by a team of epidemiologists from the DOH led by Dr. Jovin Maestro.

Filipinos Among World’s Top Smokers – Survey

Despite the existence of laws that limit smoking, male Filipino smokers are among the top smokers in the world occupying the ninth spot following India and China among others, data from the American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation revealed on Tuesday.

The 2008 data was revealed by the Department of Health (DoH) as it sought to emphasize the urgency of the passage of the sin tax bill.

Dengue Alert

Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona said Friday that they expect the number of dengue cases to go up in three months, as the rainy season approaches.

Ona called on health workers to help achieve this year’s target of less than 100,000 dengue cases for 2012. “If we do nothing, we will be again over our heads come July and August when our public hospitals are being filled to the brim with Dengue patients and Dengue outbreaks are being reported left and right. We do not want that to happen this year. More than outdoing the number of cases in 2011, our target is less than 100,000 cases for 2012. It seems a tall order for all of us but I believe that if we work together, this can be achieved.”

Helmet Law

In its latest announcement showing the magnitude of motorcycle-related injuries in the country, the Department of Health (DoH) again urged all enforcement agencies to strictly implement the “Mandatory Helmet Act of 2010” and the seatbelt law after recording a total of 943 accidents involving motorcycles in the third quarter of 2011.

New Year injuries down

The Department of Health (DoH) reported Sunday a 13 percent reduction in the number of injuries related to the New Year’ Eve revelry last Saturday, which translated to a still alarming figure of 476 victims of firecracker accidents, stray bullets, and fireworks ingestion in the week leading to 2012.

At least two people were killed in Manila after being hit by stray bullets despite the government going full blast in its campaign against firecrackers, gun-firing, and other reckless merry-making.

From chatroom to bedroom

Social media has inadvertently aided the spread of the HIV in the Philippines according to an ongoing study by the Department of Health (DOH).

Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag revealed that social media use contributed to increased sexual activity and heightened risk of HIV transmission.

The completion of the study, according to Tayag, will enable DOH to understand and address the problem.
