New Colon Cancer Drug Approved


The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved a new drug for advanced colon cancer developed by Bayer AG, a month ahead of the agency's expected action date for a decision.
The drug, to be sold under the brand name Stivarga, was approved to treat colon cancer that has progressed after prior treatment or that has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said.

Suspected Vomiting Virus Sickens 4,000 German Kids


German health authorities say at least 4,000 children have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhea after eating food from school canteens and daycare centers.
The Robert Koch-Institut says it was alerted to a sudden surge in gastroenteritis cases that began late Tuesday in Berlin and surrounding regions.

Gov’t Websites Hacked


Hackers, apparently trying to challenge the newly signed Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, struck Wednesday night and defaced the websites of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), and a unit of the Department of Health (DOH).
There were also reports that the websites of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 3 and the Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team (PAPT) were also hacked. However, the DENR denied the report.

Demitrius Omphroy is not only one of the promising newcomers in the Philippine National Football Team (Azkals), but also a music video star who has appeared in Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend."

Apple released its latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, with hundreds of new features. iOS 6 ushers to Apple’s move to not rely on Google technologies by removing YouTube and Maps. YouTube is now a third-party application released by Google and available on the iTunes App Store. This is a brilliant move for both parties -- for Apple, one less app to maintain (not easy to keep up with the latest features of Google’s YouTube without releasing an OS upgrade), and for Google, it gets to have full control of the YouTube app (and add inline advertisement for more revenue).

2M iPhone 5 Smartphones Sold


Apple Inc booked orders for over two million iPhone 5 models in the first 24 hours, reflecting a higher-than-expected demand for the consumer device giant's new smartphone and setting it up for a strong holiday quarter.
Apple shares rose in extended after-market trading to touch $700 per share for the first time. They have gained nearly 22 percent in the past 3-1/2 months in the build-up to the launch of the iPhone 5.

World's First Mom-To-Daughter Uterine Transplants In Sweden


Two Swedish women received new uteruses at the weekend in the world's first mother-to-daughter uterine transplants aimed at helping them have babies, Gothenburg University announced on Tuesday.
Uterine transplants are new, with the first successful one conducted in Turkey in 2011.
"One of the women had previously had her own uterus removed after undergoing treatment for cervical cancer. The other woman was born without a uterus. Both women are in their 30s," a statement from Gothenburg University said.

Earthworms 'marry' in Taiwan ceremony


Seventy "lucky earthworms" have been married off in an elaborate wedding ritual in south Taiwan in a bid to raise awareness about the environment and the problem of soil erosion, organisers said Monday.
The worms arrived Sunday at Takang Park in Tainan city inside a traditional wedding sedan draped in red cloth to "tie the knot with the soil of the park", Takang Community Development Association said.

DBM Settles P6.92B In Teachers’ Arrears


Thousands of public school teachers may soon enjoy higher benefits from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) after the Aquino administration finally agreed to pay overdue contributions from 1997 to 2010.
The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has committed to settle P6.92 billion in unpaid premiums of Department of Education (DepEd) personnel, representing government share in the past 13 years, while the GSIS will condone P14 billion in interest charges.

Study Bares Heavy Drinking Risks


People who drink heavily – at least four drinks a day – may be at risk of suffering a brain hemorrhage at a relatively early age, according to a French study.
Researchers whose findings were published in the journal Neurology focused on drinking habits among people who had suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage, a type of stroke where ruptured blood vessels leak blood into the brain.

Last-Minute Call For Overseas Filipinos To Register And Vote

Man Swallows $14,000 Diamond At Sri Lanka Gem Show


A man was arrested for attempted theft and taken to hospital for a dose of laxatives on Wednesday after swallowing a diamond worth nearly $14,000 at a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka, police said.
The 32-year-old had asked the stall owner for a close inspection of the 1.5-carat diamond on the opening day of Facets Sri Lanka, an annual jewellery show in the capital Colombo.

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan Dead At 54


Michael Clarke Duncan – the hulking, prolific character actor whose dozens of films included an Oscar-nominated performance as a death row inmate in “The Green Mile” and such other box office hits as “Armageddon,” “Planet of the Apes,” and “Kung Fu Panda” – is dead at age 54.
Clarke died Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a heart attack, said his fiancée, reality TV personality Rev. Omarosa Manigault, in a statement released by publicist Joy Fehily.

Public Holidays For 2013 Bared


The public may now look forward to holidays for the next year after President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 459 declaring public holidays for 2013.
Based on the proclamation, regular holidays are: January 1 (New Year’s Day), which falls on a Tuesday; March 28, Maundy Thursday; Good Friday, March 29; Araw ng Kagitingan, April 9, which falls on a Tuesday; Labor Day, May 1, which is a Wednesday; Independence Day, June 12 also a Wednesday; National Heroes’ Day (August 26), which is on the last Monday of August; Bonifacio Day (November 30), a Saturday; Christmas Day (Dec. 25), a Wednesday; and Rizal Day (Dec. 30), which is a Monday.
