It's a rainy New Year in the Philippines


Most parts of the country will experience rains on Saturday, the eve of New Year, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday.
PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando said most parts of the country will experience strong and cold wind from the northeast monsoon (hanging amihan), tail-end of a cold front, and wind convergence in the next five days.

'Asiong' wins 11 MMFF plums; Maricel, Dingdong best actors


Action-drama made an underdog comeback when box-office cellar dweller “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” won 11 awards during the “Gabi ng Parangal” of the 37th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) last Thursday Night at the Resorts World Manila Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City.

GMA-7 is adamant that ABS-CBN’s “ratings result-tapping” suit against ratings-service provider AGB Nielsen Media Research is done merely to discredit the research company.

Mango tree saves 17 lives


Ella dela Rio is not only happy at the gift of a second life but will forever be grateful not only to God but also to a mango tree which helped save 17 people.
On the night of December 16, when the rains of storm “Sendong” fell incessantly and the water began to rise to alarming levels (about 12 to 15 feet), Ella, her mother, father and husband climbed the mango tree in their backyard and watched as the debris-filled rampaging water slam into houses and turned their neighborhood in Bayug island, Iligan City into a virtual sea.

Twins with 1 body and 2 heads born in Brazil


Hospital officials in northern Brazil say a woman have given birth to conjoined twin boys with one body and two heads.
Obstetrician Neila Dahas of the Santa Casa de Misericodia Hospital in the city of Belem says the twins were born Monday by Caesarean section.

A former volunteer firefighter in a Santa suit grabbed a man from a burning vehicle and then directed traffic around a two-vehicle traffic accident this week in the Dallas area, the Santa-clad man said on Wednesday.
Brad Luddeke received worldwide attention after photos shot by passersby of him dressed as Santa directing traffic were sent to local media outlets.

Looks like the scandal surrounding controversial celebrity ex-couple Mo Twister and Rhian Ramos is far from over.
Apart from the case that Ramos' camp has filed against her former lover, this, relating to his supposed continued harassment of her --which is yet to be heard by the courts -- a new video involving the two just surfaced recently and is now making the round of social networking sites including Facebook.

'Sendong' casualties surpass 'Ondoy's' 747


National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Benito Ramos said the death toll from tropical storm “Sendong,” one of the worst to hit the country, breached the 1,000 mark on Tuesday.
The death toll has already surpassed the 747 deaths during the onslaught of “Ondoy” in 2009.

Former Venezuelan beauty queen dead at 28


Eva Ekvall, former Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe third runner-up, finally succumbed to her almost two year-long battle with breast cancer.
The Associated Press (AP) reported on Dec. 20 that the Venezuelan beauty queen passed away in a hospital in Houston, Texas last Saturday. She had a two-year old daughter with husband, radio producer John Fabio Bermudez.

A Korean man named Lee Jin-gyu fell in love with a life-sized Japanese body pillow called a “dakimakura”. The pillow has the image of a cartoon character named Fate Testarossa on it, from an anime called Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. The 28-year-old man takes his pillow with him everywhere and eventually got married to it.

Aquino signs P1.816-trillion budget for 2012


 President Aquino has signed into law the P1.816-trillion national budget for 2012, the earliest approved since democracy was restored in 1986.
The President cited the General Appropriations Act for 2012 or Republic Act No. 10155 as a "results-focused budget" to improve economic growth and deliver direct and substantial benefits to the people.

New cyclone to enter the PAR

A 20-year-old nursing student from the Philippines won the top prize in the youth category of the Goi Peace Foundation and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization sponsored International Essay Contest for Young People, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.
Dan Erwin Cruz Bagaporo, senior Nursing student from the University of Sto. Tomas, was given the Ministry of Education award as the top prize. The awarding ceremonies took place in Tokyo last November 19.

239 pass Dentist Licensure Exams


The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 239 out of 601 examinees passed the Dentist Licensure Examination (Written Phase), and 239 out of 246 passed the Dentist Licensure Examination (Practical Phase) given by the Board of Dentistry in Manila in November, 2011, and December, 2011, respectively.

The Rhian Ramos-Mo Twister saga continues


Rhian Ramos is bent on turning the latest controversy with ex-boyfriend Mo Twister into a full-blown legal battle.
In a Twitpic posted on her Twitter account on 10:14 a.m., Dec. 10, Rhian stated, “these fables and lies will be corrected in court. as this is being made into a PR battle and countless ‘final statements’, i'd like to save my efforts for my case.”
Note that as far as the leakage of Mo’s infamous video diary last week, Mo has been more vocal on the matter compared to Rhian.

“Vintage na relo, yes, [I do own some],” Kris shared on “Segunda Mano” presscon Monday, Dec. 12.
“May collection ako from ''70s and '80s [na mga relo],” she added.

Must teachers retire at 65?


 It is difficult to prescribe when a teacher must retire. The mandatory retirement age for government employees is 65, but who can really say when a teacher has outgrown his/her usefulness.
For sure, there are those who, even at the “tender” age of 50, are no longer capable to teach. This could be for any reason: a sudden ailment, disability due to a serious illness or accident, mental incapacity, or sheer fatigue.
Others may just lose interest in the teaching profession.

Fil-Am midwife is 2011 CNN 'Hero of the Year'


 A Filipino-American midwife whose foundation built “birthing sanctuaries” for Indonesians was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year.
Anderson Cooper announced the name of Robin Lim in a star-studded ceremony last Sunday night at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
Christy Turlington Burns introduced Lim as one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes.
Each of the CNN Heroes received $50,000, and Lim’s non-profit, Bumi Sehat Foundation, will receive an additional $250,000 grant.
Lim’s foundation helped Indonesians who need maternal and general health care.

Pontiff turns on world's biggest Christmas tree via tablet computer


Pope Benedict XVI used a tablet computer from his Vatican residence on Wednesday to switch on a giant light installation in Italy known as the "World's Biggest Christmas Tree."
"I hope this will be a light in the darkness," the Pope said.
The "tree" is made up of 400 large multi-colored lights arranged across a hillside above the picturesque medieval town of Gubbio and stretches to a height of 750 meters (2,461 feet) and a maximum width of 450 meters.
The shooting star at the top of the hill is made up of 250 lights and covers an area of more than 1,000 square meters (10,760 square feet).

Mo continues harping on 'abortion' issue


It seems the controversial DJ Mo Twister isn’t done expressing his feelings yet on the latest controversy involving him and ex-girlfriend Rhian Ramos.
On Dec. 7, Mo, through his Tumblr account, seemingly took a swipe at the actress, who are among celebrities who spend their birthdays with cancer-stricken kids.
Mo began, “What made me most jealous? Every year on your birthday, you’d take your camera crew and go see terminally sick children and throw a party for them.

Ms. Earth USA candidate denies making negative Facebook comments about Manila


Nicole Kelly, Miss Earth USA 2011, quickly issued a denial on her alleged public rant on Facebook where she reportedly called the Philippines “noisy and dirty.”
Kelly posted on YouTube her explanation about the brouhaha that has caught the public’s ire.
“I wanted to address something that I heard earlier, which has caught my attention. I’m very disappointed about what was written as me but it wasn’t me.  I was at a community center tour earlier when it was posted but I want to make clear that it’s never okay to cyberbully anyone,” she said.
