Philippines now 117th Rome Statute member

The Philippines has become the 117th state to join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the court that deals specifically with the most gruesome crimes facing humanity.

The Philippines deposited the Instrument of Ratification of the Rome Statute with the United Nations Secretary General on Tuesday.

In a report to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the UN in New York said the deposit was made at the UN Office of Legal Affairs Treaty Section and witnessed by Senator Loren Legarda, who heads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Justin Bieber, his Ferrari fine after minor crash

Justin Bieber and his Ferrari are both fine after a fender-bender in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Officer Gregory Baek says the 17-year-old singer was involved in “a very minor collision” Tuesday afternoon in LA’s Studio City.

The officer said no one was injured or cited and no police report was taken. There was no visible damage to Bieber’s car or the Honda Civic involved in the crash.

Bed bugs protect their sperm from bacteria

Bed bugs protect their sperm against sexually transmitted infections by producing germ-busting ejaculates, scientists have found.

Bacteria covering bed bugs' bodies are transmitted to the female, along with the sperm, during mating.

The new work shows that without the protection of antibacterial agents in the bug's ejaculate, 40% of sperm die.

Tropical Storm Katia:11th hurricane season of 2011

Tropical Storm Katia formed over the open Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, becoming the 11th named storm of the 2011 hurricane season, U.S. forecasters said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Katia was about 535 miles southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and was moving quickly west northwestward across the Atlantic.

It was too soon to gauge the storm’s potential threat to the U.S. East Coast or energy interests in the Gulf of Mexico with any confidence.

Nokia's developer network hacked

An online community used by developers of Nokia phone apps has been hacked.

The company warned that members' personal information, including dates of birth and email addresses may have been stolen.

Nokia's developer forums have been temporarily shut down while the security breach is investigated.
So far no-one has claimed responsibility for the attack and no compromised information has yet appeared elsewhere on the internet.

Casio, Lee top PBA Rookie Draft Class of 2011

There were minimal surprises in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft and much of the eye-openers were really on the trades that were consummated prior to the actual draft over at the Robinson’s Place in Ermita.

Indeed, it was a rainy event that saw several teams such as Meralco, Powerade, TnT, Barako Bull and Petron cop veterans to beef up their respective rosters and get a chance to recruit some players in the draft.

Meralco, Powerade and TnT completed a three-team deal which saw Meralco acquire the Texters number 7 pick in the first round. The deal also saw the Bolts add former TnT enforcer Mark Yee and shooter Mark Macapagal (formerly of the Powerade Tigers) to their roster.

Hurricane Irene's Health Risks Likely To Linger

Hurricane Irene's powerful one-two punch of high winds and heavy rainfall will undoubtedly result in dangerous airborne debris, fallen trees and flash floods.

4M without power as Hurricane Irene heads north

The number of power outages that can be blamed on Hurricane Irene has surpassed 4 million.

Winds of up to 115 miles per hour whipped across the Eastern Seaboard, ripping power lines from poles and snapping trees in half.

More than one million of the homes and businesses are without power in Virginia and North Carolina, which bore the brunt of Irene's initial march. There are also at least 1 million customers without electricity in New Jersey and New York.

Apple hires iPhone jailbreak hacker

Apple Inc. has hired a 19-year-old hacker who has found security vulnerabilities in the iOS software that runs its iPhone, iPad and iPod devices.
Nicholas Allegra, a.k.a. “comex," said in an entry on his Twitter account he is to start his internship with Apple.

“So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple," he tweeted.

TechCrunch said Allegra had made the process of jailbreaking the iPhone “as simple as visiting a webpage using mobile Safari."

World's oldest person celebrates birthday

A birthday party is planned at a north Georgia nursing home for Besse Cooper, who's listed as the world's oldest person.

The Aug. 26 party will celebrate her 115th birthday.

Cooper was declared the world's oldest last January. In May, Guinness learned that Maria Gomes Valentin of Brazil was 48 days older. Valentin died June 21.

UPLB grad leads 240 new licensed agricultural engineers

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Friday announced that 240 out of 502 passed the Agricultural Engineer Licensure Examination given by the Board of Agricultural Engineering this month.

The examination were held in Manila, Baguio and Davao cities. The members of the Board of Agricultural Engineering are Engr. Ariodear C. Rico, chairman; Engr. Juana T. Tapel and Engr. Felimar M. Torrizo, members.

Jared William Gandola Barker III of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños topped the examination with a rating of 85.10%

PRC said that the results were released in 3 days from the last day of examination.

PRC revokes Hayden's medical license

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) cancelled Tuesday the medical license of Dr. Hayden Kho in connection with sex videos.

Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. said that the PRC move is an affirmation of the Senate’s findings that he may have committed unethical offenses when he took videos of his sex acts with different women in the past.

 Kids with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are more likely to have writing problems such as poor spelling and grammar than their peers, suggests a new study. And the difference may be especially conspicuous in girls with ADHD.

Edith Tiempo: Mother of Philippine Literature Dies at 92

Edith Tiempo, widely acknowledged as the Mother of Philippine Literature, reportedly died on Sunday. She was 92.

She was conferred the National Artist Award for Literature in 1999.

"National Artist for Literature Edith Tiempo passed away at 92," ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao reporter Rod Bolivar said on microblogging site Twitter on Sunday night.

Teachers fight back against being 'YouTubed'

In one video a student rails against his teacher, explaining how much he "hates her" due to her "boring lessons."

In another the message is more ominous, with the teenage student venting about his 11th grade science teacher and saying "I don't even care if she sees this."

He added, "I despise this lady. I never knew I could hate anybody this much," before brandishing a knife and making stabbing motions towards the camera.

April Boy Regino confirms he has prostate cancer

Jukebox King April Boy Regino, who migrated to the US in 2005, revealed that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 after doctors found blood in his sperm, reports GMA News.

In an ABS-CBN report, Regino said he had difficulty accepting the situation. "Parang hindi po ako makapaniwala dahil sabi ko bakit ako magkakaroon ng prostate cancer eh napakabata ko pa? Parang nagtanong po ako sa Diyos na bakit ako nagkaroon ng ganitong sakit (I couldn't believe it because I was still so young. I even questioned God why it was given to me)," he said, adding that he used to subscribe to the notion that cancer meant death.

The first time I saw and ate longan was in Baguio City when I attended a writeshop. I wonder what health benefits I can get from it.

Longan also known as "dragon's eye" (because of an ovoid, white eye shaped mark on the pit). The longan is China's gift to Southeast Asia, where it was brought by Chinese emigrants hundred of years ago. The evergreen longan tree has heavily foliaged branches with leathery leaves which have a glossy surface and underneath are covered with minute hair. The flowers are pale yellow and hairy. The juicy pulp, which is easily separated from its shell, is white and translucent. Embedded in it is a large, shiny jet black seed. The
fruit has a juicy and sweet taste.

DepEd orders makeup classes

Local school officials and principals could schedule make-up classes as the deem fit to catch up on lost time following consecutive class disruptions in areas affected by Tropical Storm “Juaning,” the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Thursday.

Schools that suspended classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, including kindergarten, elementary and high schools in the National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog, the Bicol Region, and Central Luzon, may set up extra class days to offset lost days.

Advertising accounts for 97% of Google’s revenue; the search giant makes more than US$32 billion a month from this revenue stream, and the number continues to climb.

Skype Launches an Official iPad App

The official Skype application for iPad has landed in the iTunes App Store and is now available to download.

The app works over both WiFi and 3G and takes advantage of the front-facing camera included on the iPad 2 by offering one-on-one video chat. Until now, iPad owners had to settle for the iPhone version of Skype, which of course operates at a fraction of the screen size (or in a somewhat distorted fullscreen mode).

Tropical Storm Emily formed over the Caribbean on Monday, far from energy production facilities in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico but posing a possible threat to them nonetheless.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Emily, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, was packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour as it formed near the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles islands.
