DepEd orders makeup classes
Local school officials and principals could schedule make-up classes as the deem fit to catch up on lost time following consecutive class disruptions in areas affected by Tropical Storm “Juaning,” the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Thursday.
Schools that suspended classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, including kindergarten, elementary and high schools in the National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog, the Bicol Region, and Central Luzon, may set up extra class days to offset lost days.
“School principals, in coordination with local school officials, may decide to hold classes on Saturdays to make up for days when classes were suspended because of the typhoon,” said DepEd Communications Unit.
DepEd’s administrative code authorizes extra class schedules on weekends in case of class suspensions.
Based on this year’s school calendar, public elementary and high schools have a total of 204 school days, including 180 days strictly for academic activities and a 24–day allowance for extra-curricular activities.
DepEd suspended classes in typhoon-affected regions in Luzon as Juaning dumped heavy rains and caused heavy flooding across several regions early this week.
Classes in most regions returned to normal yesterday, with class suspensions extended only in the pre-school level.
