Fish Scales Being Recycled Into Useful Goodies

What would you say to a cup or a pair of glasses made out of fish scales? Confused? It’s pretty straightforward and ingenious really. Crafty designer Erik de Laurens has come up with a way to make a plastic-like material out of discarded fish scales. As if that wasn’t wonderful enough, he doesn’t use any bonding agents – just fish scales and colourful dye fused together with heat and pressure.

This admirable All Consuming project – aptly called The Fish Feast – first started out in a little primary school in Cape Town, where children went out to catch their own fish to prepare a meal. Instead of throwing away the leftover fish-bits De Laurens decided to make fish-scale cups and a fish-leather water dispenser to be used in the school canteen. That’s one seriously creative way to Stick With What You Got – even if what you’ve got is fish scales!

What’s not to love about this peculiar and perfect plastic. It’s a creative and resourceful way for us to make something durable out of the many tonnes of fish scales regularly thrown out by the fishing industry. Plus it’s taking us one step closer to shrugging off our dependency on petroleum plastics. And it looks damn nice!

So far it’s  been used to make all sorts of wonderful things – from glasses, to swimming goggles and decorative inlays. We love, love, love! Inspired? Check out this lovely little blog on the many magical uses of milk!
