Samsung Unveils New Galaxy Note

Samsung Electronics Co unveils the second generation of its popular Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet at Europe's biggest electronics show in Berlin later on Wednesday, as the South Korean firm comes under pressure to innovate after losing a US patent battle with Apple, Inc.

A US federal jury last week found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.

For the first time, boxer-politician Manny Pacquiao entered Forbes’ yearly list of the 20 Highest-Paid Celebrities, ranking 16th with $67 million in earnings.

Despite Pacquiao’s controversial loss to Timothy Bradley in their June bout—the former's first defeat inside the ring in seven years—the Sarangani representative continues to enjoy a lucrative career. Forbes wrote: “Pacquiao has become a pay-per-view stud, with five fights each generating at least one million PPV buys during the past four years.”

US Approves New Once-A-Day Pill To Treat HIV

A new pill to treat HIV infection – combining two previously approved drugs plus two new ones -- has been approved for adults living with the virus that causes AIDS, US regulators said Monday.

The single daily dose of Stribild provides a complete treatment regimen for HIV infection, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement, and is meant for people who have not already received treatment with other HIV drugs.

Apple Seeks Ban On 8 Samsung Phones

Apple, Inc is seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung Electronics phones, moving swiftly to translate its resounding court victory over its arch-foe into a tangible business benefit.

The world's most valuable company wasted no time in identifying its targets on Monday: eight older-model smartphones, including the Galaxy S2 and Droid Charge. While Apple's lawsuit encompassed 28 devices, many of those accused products are no longer widely available in the world's largest mobile market.

There are no accurate statistics on the extent of abuses committed by foreign employers on their foreign workers, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay said on Tuesday.

At the 23rd Conference of the Presidents of Law Associations in Asia at a hotel in Pasay City, Binay said that the documentation and data-gathering are hampered mainly by the lack of cooperation by host countries.

Statistics also do not reflect foreign workers who went through clandestine channels and without authorization do not appear in the rosters of workers of their country of origin.

Korean Agency CEO Convicted For Sexual Assault

A Korean court has found the chief executive officer of Open World Entertainment guilty of sexually assaulting four star-wannabes or trainees and sentenced him to six years in prison.

On Aug. 10, the Seoul Central District Court convicted Jang Seok-woo, 51. In addition to the imprisonment, the court also sentenced Jang to two years of probation and ordered him to undergo 40 hours of sex offender treatment program.

His personal information will also be made public for five years.

High-Energy Biscuits For Flood Victims

The United Nations' World Food Program (WFP) has donated 52.5 metric tons of high-energy biscuits to help feed 262,500 people affected by the recent widespread flooding in Metro Manila and outlying provinces.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has been distributing the wheat-based biscuits fortified with vitamins and minerals, the WFP said Saturday.

Chemotherapy Can Backfire And Boost Cancer Growth

Cancer-busting chemotherapy can cause damage to healthy cells which triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumor growth and resistance to further treatment, a study said Sunday.

Researchers in the United States made the "completely unexpected" finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab.

They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine.

Jennifer Lopez suing driver for 20 million dollars

Jennifer Lopez is suing her former driver for $20 million for allegedly trying to blackmail her for $2.8 million, CNN reported Wednesday.

The report said that the lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles last week, alleging that an attorney representing driver Hakob Manoukian demanded that ''unless Manoukian was paid $2.8 million, he would disclose sensitive and personal information that he allegedly heard while driving Lopez.''

83 million accounts could be fake, according to Facebook

Facebook's latest figures showing growth in global users also highlights concerns that some may come from dubious sources -- duplicate accounts, pages for pets and those designed for spam.

Facebook members grew to 955 million at the end of the second quarter, but as many as 83 million may be dodgy, the company said in its quarterly filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

PAGASA: Metro Manila on Red Alert Status

As of 9 p.m. Monday, PAGASA has upped the rainfall alert level from green to Red due to "heavy to intense" rains.

“An accumulated rainfall of 83.5mm was recorded over Quezon City and 63.5mm over Marikina for the past 3hrs,” the state weather bureau said via their official Twitter account.

Giving his fans a good reason to celebrate, the 27-year-old basketball heartthrob Chris Tiu—who also dabbles into modeling, TV hosting, being a politician and a businessman —announces that he has finally decided to file an application for the 2012 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) draft.

Tiu excited fans on Friday when he hinted on his decision via Twitter, posting: “Hello PBA :)”

He eventually made the announcement official in an interview with PEP the same day.
