Climate change 'threatens peace', UN official warns

Achim Steiner from the UN Environment Programme said climate change would also "exponentially" increase the scale of natural disasters.

His comments followed a UN declaration of famine in parts of Somalia.

Meanwhile, Russia rejected a Security Council statement backed by Western nations which asserted the link, but later agreed to a weaker text.

Manny Pacquiao's membership application to Manila Polo Club denied

World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao's application to join the elite Manila Polo Club has been denied, reports PEP.ph. The reason, explained an unnamed Manila Golf Club board member, may be exclusivity.

"It's a small club in a small village. They want to preserve a lifestyle," said the board member. He also added that contrary to what was published in Boxingplanet.net that Pacquiao applied to both the Manila Polo Club and the Manila Golf Club, the Pound-for-Pound King only tried for the former.

Comelec Chief says FPJ won 2004 elections

Commission on Elections chair and lawyer Sixto Brillantes Jr. remains a firm believer that the late Fernando Poe Jr. won the controversial 2004 presidential elections over Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, reports GMA News. Brillantes issued this statement after Sen. Chiz Escudero filed on Tuesday, July 18, a resolution to investigate the alleged anomalies of the said elections.

A Missing Protein: Culprit in Millions of Cases of Male Infertility

A missing protein may be the culprit in millions of cases of male infertility, according to a report released Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, discovered that the absence of a protein that helps sperm swim through cervical mucus and "cloaks" them from the female immune system likely contributes to startling infertility numbers. In at least 20 percent of men, the genes that trigger the protein are mutated, leaving their sperm completely vulnerable and unlikely to make it very far.

Chinese great Yao Ming retires from basketball

Yao Ming has made it official Wednesday, telling a packed news conference in his hometown that a series of foot and leg injuries have forced him to retire from basketball.

"I will formally end my career," said Yao, the 7-fooot-6 center who became a household name in China before starting his NBA career with the Houston Rockets as the top draft pick in 2002.

2011 World Junior Surfing Competition in Siargao

Preparations are under way for the 2011 World Junior Surfing Competition to be held at the famous Cloud 9 in General Luna, Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte, known also as “Paradise Island.”

Officials said at least 200 junior surfers coming from the 40 countries have already signified their intention to participate in the international surfing tourney in September this year.

A new law signed by President Benigno Aquino III mandates state agencies to resolve a government employee’s case three months before retirement or else his or her benefits would have to be released although without prejudice to the ultimate resolution of the case.

The eighth and final "Harry Potter" movie sold $92.1 million worth tickets in the United States and Canada on its first day in theaters to set a single-day box-office record, according to studio estimates released on Saturday.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" shattered the single-day record set in 2009 when "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" earned $72.7 million in theaters, said Paul Dergarabedian, head of tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office.

A stick figure is a very simple type of drawing made of lines and dots, often of the human form or other animals. In a stick figure, the head is represented by a circle, sometimes embellished with details such as eyes, mouth or crudely scratched-out hair. The arms, legs and torso are all represented by straight lines. There has been much debate about whether stick figures should have necks and this varies from artist to artist. However the general consensus is that stick figures do not require necks.

Study finds Type 1 diabetics' life span increases

Those with type 1 diabetes historically faced a shortened life expectancy. But those diagnosed since 1965 can expect a near normal life span, a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study concludes.

The study led by Trevor J. Orchard, a professor of epidemiology, pediatrics and medicine, found that people diagnosed with type 1 between 1965 and 1980 had a life expectancy of 68.8 years. The general population's is about 73.
