Eastern Visayas hit by 5.9-magnitude earthquake


A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.9-magnitude on the Richter scale jolted parts of Eastern Visayas Tuesday evening and was followed by a weak tremor Wednesday.
 
The tremor was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday that originated 55 kilometers (km) northeast of Mercedes, Eastern Samar.
 
Intensity V was felt in Hernani, Salcedo, Borongan and Guiuan in Eastern Samar, while Intensity IV in Tacloban, Palo and Tolosa in Leyte, Catbalogan in Samar, and Dolores and San Policarpio in Eastern Samar was recorded.
 
St. Bernard and Hinunangan towns in Southern Leyte, Catarman in Northern Samar, and Surigao City felt the quake at Intensity III.
 
Intensity II was felt in Naval, Biliran, while Intensity I was recorded in Cebu City and Carascal in Surigao del Sur.
 
A 3.7-magnitude earthquake was also recorded at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday that originated 49 km northeast of Mercedes, Eastern Samar.
 
Phivolcs said there was no reported damage to property or loss of lives due to the earthquake in Leyte. Likewise, it does not expect aftershocks to occur. 
 
Last Tuesday, another moderately strong tremor shook parts of Davao Region.
 
At 6 p.m. Tuesday a 5.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded by Phivolcs with its epicenter located 29 km northeast of Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur.
 
Intensity III was felt in Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur and Tarragona, Davao Oriental.
 
Intensity II was recorded in Padada and Matanao in Davao del Sur, Manay and Cateel in Davao Oriental, Davao City, and Digos City, while Intensity I was felt in General Santos City.
