Paint Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles

This is actually quite a wonderful color and it’s perfect for the summer. And the great thing about it? Lots of reasons.

This paint is made from recycled plastic bottles. It has made good use of waste that would have supposedly filled out landfills, for one thing. And its paint formulation and its use actually bring about less air pollution than regular paints, where its mostly oil based.

The paint, developed by Sherwin-Williams, a manufacturing company, has impressed green advocates so much the EPA has bestowed the company a green award for Chemistry because of it. The award was bestowed to the company this week, during the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards.

The recycled bottle based paint has low acrylic levels combined with alkyd, which makes it less susceptible to triggering respiratory problems, damage to the lungs and nervous systems and other types of irritation that men usually get wit regular paint.

The company has apparently made enough of these paint last year, that it can replace some 800,000 pounds of volatile organic compounds. These are made available through products like:
  • ProClassic Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd
  • ProMar 200 Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd
  • ProIndustrial Waterborne Enamel.
