June 12 remains regular holiday
MalacaƱang announced Sunday that June 12, Sunday, will remain a regular holiday to commemorate the 113th Independence Day in the country.
Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the Palace has no plans to move the Independence Day holiday to June 13, Monday, to highlight the importance of the historic day on June 12, 1898.
Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte said the Palace has no plans to move the Independence Day holiday to June 13, Monday, to highlight the importance of the historic day on June 12, 1898.
June 12, celebrated every year to observe the declaration of independence in the country, is listed as one of the regular holidays for 2011 under Proclamation No. 84 signed by President Aquino. The proclamation no longer applied the holiday economics policy used by the past government which moved some holidays to the nearest Monday.
“In the proclamation this year, we listed the regular and special holidays. We have holidays moved to the nearest Monday and some were not moved because celebrations were meant to be for that day,” Valte said over government radio. “June 12 will not be moved.”
President Aquino recently directed the National Historical Commission of the Philippines to organize activities for the country's freedom rites on June 12.
Administrative Order no. 12 also set aside at least P10 million for the commemorative activities for the nation's Independence Day.
The government earlier asked Filipinos to display the Philippine flag at home, offices, schools and other public places from May 28 to June 12.
