Electric Fishes

Some fishes are able to produce electricity in their bodies. Their batteries are special blocks of muscles. When an ordinary muscle gets a message from the brain, it starts to move. Electric fish have special muscles which cannot move, but instead when they receive a message from the brain - really a very small electric current - they give out electricity. If they use all these muscles at the same time, a powerful shock can be felt in the waternearby, other electric fish use electric discharges to defend themselves or to help them find their way about in muddy water.
