Recap Ateneo and La Salle's first basketball standoff this UAAP season

The Ateneo Blue Eagles beat archrivals the De La Salle Green Archers 81-72 in an action-packed game last July 16 at the Araneta Coliseum. Rookie Eagle Kiefer Ravena broke out with a whopping 24 points (22 in the first half alone), solidifying him as a formidable presence on court.

In a Philippine Daily Inquirer feature, Blue Eagles head coach Norman Black said, “It’s the first time (Ravena) started in a UAAP game. I give him a lot of credit for the way he played, the way he stepped up during the first half. But every game will be a different story.” Now touted the “Blue Mamba,” Ravena had been scoreless in his college ball debut against the Adamson Falcons last week but the rookie more than made up for it with an additional 10 rebounds and five steals in his second UAAP showing. Nico Salva also contributed a good 18 points while Kirk Long and Francis Monfort gave 10 each.

A solid performance from returning Archer LA Revilla (22 points) wasn’t enough to counter the blue team’s dominance. With veteran players Simon Atkins and Maui Villanueva racking only two points each and power forward Joshua Webb sinking zero baskets, the green team relied heavily on its younger players to carry the game.

After a weak rally in the early part of the game, however, the Archers nearly caught up in the fourth quarter, cutting the 62-49 gap to just 66-59 with over six minutes to play. A minute left in the game and the Archers trimmed the lead down to five—75-70. Ateneo shooting guard Emman Monfort, however, reset the lead when he sank six out of six crucial free throws.
