Leptospirosis outbreak hits Northern Mindanao

The Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Mindanao has declared a leptospirosis outbreak in the city and had placed government and non-government hospitals in Northern Mindanao on a “Code Red” status.

DoH-10, Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas issued the order after 200 charts and records of admissions and outpatient consultations were reviewed from the different hospitals in the city last December 29-31.

Bernadas said 128 of these patients fitted the case definition of suspected leptospirosis, with ages ranging from one year to 75 years old.

Eighty-one percent of the patients were males or 113 out of 139, he said.
