The Differences between Tablet PCs and Laptops

Ten years ago, it was the laptop computer that was dominating the tech market but nowadays, more people prefer the more portable tablet PCs. Since the introduction of Apple’s iPad in 2010, tablet computers have been outselling laptops. But this is not to say, however, that the former is outperforming the latter.

Some people regard tablet PCs as a replacement to laptops. These people are those who use computing devices only for entertainment purposes – reading eBooks, watching movies, and logging in on social networking sites. However, for those who use these devices for creative works, particularly activities that require extensive data input, tablet PCs are insufficient.

To better understand the advantages and disadvantages of tablet PCs and laptop computers, here are some of their distinctions.

Cost

The cost of high end tablet PCs like the iPad 2 is more or less the price tag of an entry level laptop computer.

Ease of Use

Being created for more portability and comfort, tablet PCs are easier to use than laptop computers. Laptop operations are based on the operating system and the software. If you are unfamiliar with a particular program, it would be hard to operate it. But with the applications (or apps) of tablet PCs, the process is much simpler. You can easily learn how to navigate and browse through the features and applications of your device.

Keyboard

Another obvious difference between a laptop and a tablet PC is the keyboard. Unlike laptops, tablet PCs have no physical keyboard. Instead, they use built-in software that allows on-screen typing. This touch-screen feature of tablet PCs is a drawback for a person who does a lot of typing, since it would require him to look and not just feel the keyboard.

Trackpad

Since rablet PCs are touch-screen devices, it is easier to navigate and click and double-click on it, compared to when you are using the physical trackpad of a laptop computer.

Viewing Angle

Unlike laptops, tablet PCs do not allow angle adjustment. They just sit flat and require users to look down on the screen. With laptops, however, one can tilt the screen to an angle that is ideal for an easy viewing.

Speed and Personalization

Connecting to the Internet and doing business online, such as paying bills, transferring money, and checking emails, is easier with tablet computers. You do not have to locate a secure hot spot and log in so as to do your errands. Aside from this, tablet PCs are more personal than laptops. You can access your stored documents on your hand-held device without your laptop. In a nutshell, tablet PCs bring the functionality of your laptop closer to your fingertips.

With these, we can see the differences between laptops and Tablet PCs. However, the matter of choosing which one is better would be decided upon by the user himself, based on his needs and his way of using the device.
