Pacquiao's yellow gloves have to wait for P-Noy
The handover of world boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao historic yellow gloves has to wait.
Saturday, Pacquiao, who successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against American Shane Mosley, was eager to hand the yellow gloves to President Benigno S. Aquino III but his planned courtesy call was called off as the President had a prior engagement.
Nevertheless, MalacaƱang expressed elation on the pound-forpound king’s homecoming, saying the Filipino people are looking forward to his upcoming bouts.
“Welcome home, Congressman Manny Pacquiao. We’re very happy to have you back and we look forward to your next fight,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said Saturday.
“I understand meron nang mga inaayos para sa mga susunod na laban ni Cong. Pacquiao [I understand there are upcoming bouts being arranged for Cong. Pacquiao] and I know the rest of the country will be eagerly awaiting another spectacular match from the Pacman,” she added.
Pacquiao won over Mosley last Sunday (Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada), retaining his WBO title.
President Aquino personally called the pound-for-pound king during a short break following the 18th ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he led the Philippine delegation last weekend.
The President had apologized to Pacquiao for not being able to watch the fight, except for rounds six to 10 during a break in the Summit.
The call lasted for two to three minutes, in which President Aquino informed the boxing champ that his flight was delayed due to typhoon “Bebeng.”
