Lacson's birthday wish: Reunited family
For his 63rd birthday Wednesday, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said his greatest wish is just to see his family whole again.
After confirming in previous interviews that his son Panfilo Lacson Jr. is already separated with actress Jodi Sta. Maria, Lacson said Tuesday the couple is now on their way to finalizing their separation formally.
In an interview, Lacson told the Manila Bulletin that his son is now preparing to file an annulment case against Sta. Maria.
“Ni-re resolve na lang nila yung custody ng bata because yung anak ko mahal na mahal niya yung anak niya eh. Panfilo the Third yun, eh,” said Lacson referring to his grandson “Thirdy.”
The younger Lacson has one son with Sta. Maria.
A staunch advocate of the Reproductive Health bill, Lacson clarified his views on the divorce bill now pending deliberations at the House of Representatives.
Lacson said his stand on the divorce bill remains negative as he still believes in the sanctity of marriage.
“Nagkakagulo na nga sa RH bill, papasukan pa natin ng divorce. I don’t think the Philippines is ready with that kind of legislation. It will further divide the country and the Catholic Church,” Lacson said.
“Though I am supportive of the RH bill, I view divorce as a more contentious issue,” he further said.
Should the divorce bill be approved in the Philippines, Lacson said he foresees the possibility of people abusing the law to the extent of even legalizing same sex marriages.
“So wag na tayo sana umabot dun. Kung nasa step one na tayo sa RH bill, wag na tayo tumuntong dun sa step two na divorce naman tutulak natin,” he said.
But Lacson is optimistic none of his colleagues in the Senate will file a counterpart bill pushing the legalization of divorce in the country.
“We don’t need a divorce bill dahil meron na tayong annulment at ni relax na yung mga requirements to annul marriages,” he said.
“Dito naman sa atin pag annul na yung marriage, free naman to marry either spouse eh, so why rub it in and file a divorce bill?” he pointed out.
