Cebu's biggest bibingka hopes to break world record
Residents of Mandaue in Cebu prepared a giant rice cake early this week not only to celebrate the city's annual bibingka festival but also to break a world record.
Some 6,000 regular-sized rice cakes formed the 182-square-meter bibingka. It had a diameter of 50 feet and thickness of 3 inches.
It contained 50 sacks of malagkit (glutinous rice), 50 sacks of sugar, and milk from 13,500 coconuts.
The Mayol family, said to be the pioneers of bibingka-making in Mandaue, prepared the giant rice cake with the help of over a hundred teachers and volunteers.
They are hoping to beat South Korea's record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest rice cake at 8,113 pounds.
Mandaue City is known for its tasty bibingka, a popular delicacy in the Philippines especially during the Christmas season.
