Blessed John Paul II Limited Edition Stamps to be Issued

The Philippine Postal Office (PhilPost) will issue limited edition stamps of the Blessed Pope John Paul II in May.

PhilPost said the limited edition stamps will feature the life and times of the blessed pontiff.

“In his 26 years of pontificate, the Philippines [has] found a special place in the heart of Pope John Paul II whom he considered a bastion of Christianity in Asia. Until his death in 2005, His holiness has made pastoral visits in 1981 in different places in the country which included Manila, Cebu City, Davao City, Bacolod City, Iloilo City, Legazpi City, Morong, Bataan, and Baguio City,” the PhilPost said in a press statement.
Stamps enthusiasts and collectors may avail of the stamps at the Postage and Philatelic Department located at the historic Manila Central Post Office Building in Liwasang Bonifacio.

Traveling exhibits

In 2005, PhilPost launched the traveling exhibits dubbed as “Love and Prayers for the Pope” Philatelic and Photo Exhibit in different parts of the country. The event was supported by Ambassador Henrietta T De Villa, former ambassador to the Holy See.

The exhibit featured stamps issued by PhilPost to commemorate the Pope’s 1981 pastoral visit to Manila, 1995 World Youth Day and the 4th World Meeting of the Families. Also included were the Pope's biography, last will and testament, travels, prayers, writing and photos. This traveling exhibit was brought to different churches, schools and cities nationwide.

Born Karol Josef Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian elected by the College of Cardinals to lead the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected on October 16, 1978.

The Pope was born in Poland and was the second of 2 sons of Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska.
In 1995, Pope John Paul II got a world record for the largest gathered crowd during his World Youth Day visit to the Philippines. An estimated 4 million people attended his Mass at the Luneta Park in Manila.
