The famous Cebu dancing inmates have gone "Gangnam Style."
About 1,000 prisoners at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) braved the rain last Sept. 29 to show their awesome performance of Korean rapper Psy's "Gangnam Style," culled from the viral video that has accumulated 332 million views since its upload on YouTube last July.
Clad in their orange uniforms, the inmates showed their audience the dancing skills that made them famous.
On July 17, 2007, a video of the inmates dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" became an instant YouTube hit and has racked up 51 million views to date. The video was uploaded by then CPDRC Head Byron Garcia.
From "Thriller," the inmates also danced to other songs including Queen's "Radio Gaga," "Rico Mambo," "Do The Hustle," and "Macarena."
In 2009, they also danced to the Wonder Girls' "Nobody," a remix of Big Bang's "Lies" and Wonder Girls' "Tell Me," and Super Junior's "Sorry Sorry."
"Gangnam Style" was the first public performance for the inmates in seven months since the Cebu provincial government suspended their show privileges last February following an incident inside the jail facility.
The Cebu dancing inmates hold shows for the public every last Saturday of the month.
Since "Gangnam Style" became a viral hit on YouTube, Psy has gone to top Billboard charts and was invited to various shows in the US including the MTV Video Music Awards, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "The Today Show." The song is currently No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Guinness World Records has officially declared "Gangnam Style" as the "most liked' video on YouTube.
On Oct. 1, Psy has made another history by becoming the first Asian singer to top the UK music chart.
"Gangnam Style" has leaped to the No. 1 spot on the Official UK Singles Top 100, according to the Official Charts Company.
"He’s done it! Gangnam Style fever has swept the globe this month and today officially conquers the UK, galloping all the way to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart," according to an article on the chart website.
Psy toppled Irish rock band The Script from the No. 1 spot. "Gangnam Style" was No. 3 on the chart last week.
"Gangnam Style" has been on the chart for six weeks and its sales increased by 73 percent, edging out The Script's "Hall of Fame" by a margin of 26,000 copies, according to the UK chart website.
With the feat, Psy is planning to visit the UK soon.
"Thanks to all the UK fans out there for supporting me and 'Gangnam Style.' Guess what? I am coming!" said Psy as quoted by the Officialcharts.com.
