Ruffa recalls past with John Lloyd, reveals why affair didn't last

It is common in showbiz when couples keep denying their relationship until they call it quits.
The same holds water in the case of Ruffa Gutierrez and John Lloyd Cruz.
It was in 2008 when Ruffa and John Lloyd met on the set of the ABS-CBN’s adaptation of “I Love Betty La Fea.” Their friendship elevated to a serious relationship in March 2009 but they kept it private.
In her tell-all interview aired on “Paparazzi Showbiz Exposed” Nov. 6, Ruffa recalled the past she shared with John Lloyd.
When asked by “Paparazzi” co-host Mo Twister on why she kept her relationship with the actor a secret even up to their breakup, Ruffa answered: “Unang-una hindi naman talaga ako mahilig mag-broadcast ng aking personal life, especially back then. You know, I just came out of a big relationship and masyadong maraming kailangang isipin. Yung mga anak ko, yung career niya, yung career ko. And sa lahat ng aspeto naman siyempre, hindi kami ni John Lloyd bagay. You know, let’s face reality, it was something we were happy just keeping it to ourselves, and tama na yun para sa amin.”
On how the relationship ended, Ruffa related: “Alam mo yung pagiging babaero niya, siguro second na lang yun, eh. Pero let’s first go to the problem na sinabi niya sa akin na ayun, ‘Hindi mo magugustuhan pag nakilala mo na ako.’ And I said, ‘Ano yun?’ Then sinabi nga niya sa akin na ‘I drink a lot, hapon pa lang minsan umiinom na ako.’
“And of course coming from a relationship so volatile [and] abusive, ang sagot ko sa kanya, ‘You can drink all you want till you turn blue, I don’t care.’ Pero naging problema yun, kasi there were times na we would go out, bigla na lang siya nakakatulog. Binubuhat siya palabas ng club, siyempre nahihiya naman ako. So that was our main problem.
“Kasi para sa akin, if there’s another girl, okay, I don’t even wanna be with you anymore. I don’t wanna force anyone who doesn’t wanna be with me.”
According to Ruffa, she called it quits with John Lloyd February of 2010. This was when she attended a closed-door meeting with John Lloyd Cruz and Shaina Magdayao with Mariole Alberto of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic.
Who reached out first?
After months of no communication, Ruffa revealed that “it was John Lloyd [who] first got in touch with me again.”
“And he did so through a friend of mine that he worked with in a commercial. So na-shock talaga ako nung he reached out and started texting me again. Kasi nagsisisi daw siya sa ginawa niya. And he even said he [doesn’t] know how he started at that time because he is still confused. Okay, so he started calling me again... uhm that was June?
“Right after my birthday. Actually, I came from Hong Kong June 2010, and then sabi niya, you know, he was very confused,” Ruffa related.
Incidentally, it was also in June 2010 when John Lloyd publicly admitted his relationship with Shaina Magdayao on “The Buzz.”
Ruffa continued, “So June, July, August, September... November, Star Magic Ball. And that was when the news came out [about a] ‘lock issue,’ and that was already kasi, during that time I was in Tokyo. So, almost half of the year, he continued to call me. Sabi ko, ‘Ayusin mo muna ‘yang problema mo.’
“And sabi niya, hindi daw niya kaya because of his career. And I said, ‘You know what, for me this is just very ah’ ...how would I say it... ‘Before you contact me again, you should be a man.’ You only think about your career... think about everyone involved.”
News of Shaina confronting Ruffa through a 2 a.m. phone call broke in January 2011. This incident led Ruffa to ask John Lloyd not to communicate with her anymore.
John Lloyd and Shaina reportedly called it quits last month. Several reports claim that Ruffa is the reason behind their breakup. The couple denied Ruffa’s involvement, however.
