Nicole Scherzinger as the next Mary Magdalene?
Fil-Am singer Nicole Scherzinger is reportedly reprising the role of Mary Magdalene in the upcoming film remake of the 1970s rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
As said on the website of United Kingdom tab, The Sun, the former Pussycat Doll was purportedly having “secret talks” with English composer and “Jesus Christ Superstar” creator Andrew Lloyd Webber (“Phantom of the Opera” & “Cats”) for over six months now in order to hash out the deal.
More, it is also said that the “movie bosses hope to put together a string of stage shows where she'll perform some of the tracks from the movie."
Earlier this year, prior to being part of the US reality show “The X Factor,” Scherzinger hinted to UK tab Daily Mirror about wanting to work with Webber.
"‘X Factor’ is hot, but for me Andrew Lloyd Webber is the foundation. He’s where it all began. He’s a legend. He’s more theatrical. If there’s any way I can have a working and creative relationship with Andrew that would be my greatest honor. For ‘X Factor,’ I think the intention to win is to become famous, whereas for theatre it’s a more rewarding prize," said she.
The stage musical was first performed on Broadway in 1971 and was remade for the big screen only two years later, with "If I Can't Have You" sung by Yvonne Elliman in the role of Mary Magdalene for both stage and screen versions.
This revolutionary rock opera, which according to a broadwayworld.com report, “reinvented musical theatre for the modern age,” tells the story of the last week of Christ's life. The fervor with which Christ's followers are hailing him as the Son of God becomes a source of dismay to his disciple Judas Iscariot. As religious zeal provokes brutal suppression by the occupying Romans, Judas is forced to make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal.
As of this writing, Scherzinger is yet to confirm being cast in the said role.
Meanwhile, it appears that “The X Factor” judge is quite intent on branching out into the movies. Scherzinger will be seen in the 2012 comeback of the sci-fi/action/comedy flick “Men in Black III,” in which she plays a “futuristic villainous vixen” named Lilly alongside Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.
