EDSA renaming after Cory sought

In honor of former President Corazon C. Aquino, Bohol Rep. Rene Relampagos has proposed the renaming of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Metro Manila to Cory Aquino Avenue.
Relampagos filed House Bill 5422 to change the name of Metro Manila’s 24-kilometer long main circumferential road and highway, which was formerly known as Highway 54.
The road runs in a semicircle around Manila and passes through the cities of Pasay, Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, and Caloocan.
Aside from being the longest and busiest road in the country, EDSA has become synonymous to the People Power Revolution and – in effect – to democracy, he stressed.
The proposed measure intends to repeal Republic Act 2140, which paved the way for the renaming of the Highway 54 to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in 1959. De los Santos was a renowned Filipino patriot, scholar and historian.
“Indeed, one cannot think of the 1986 EDSA Revolution without thinking of Corazon C. Aquino. Even after her term as President of the Republic, she lived her life fighting for democracy, as she goes out of her way to fight for justice and truth, for peace and democracy,” Relampagos said in filing HB 5422.
“It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon C Aquino, a woman of courage and valor, that EDSA – an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy – be named after her,” he stressed.
