Melanie Marquez now into farming
Former beauty queen Melanie Marquez now enjoys a more quiet life in the US with her new occupation: farming.
The controversial supermodel is proud of her latest venture, telling ABS-CBN’s “Balitang America” in a recent interview, “From glamorous life and then to the unglamorous, I became a farmer. Importante sa tao hindi lang puro glamour. Kelangang magkaroon tayo ng abilidad.”
Although her modeling career has apparently taken a backseat, Melanie nevertheless graced a local fashion show in Mesa, Arizona recently, “Balitang America” also reported.
In the same interview, Melanie admitted feeling like a “beginner again” in this glamorous setting.
“I feel so nervous, you know. But it’s nice to do this show because it’s a charity show. That’s why I’m here. There is a purpose,” she added.
The 1979 Miss International winner wore creations of Edgar Madamba, Edgar San Diego and Richard Papa, who, according to the “Balitang America” report, have been going around "key cities" in the States for the past six weeks.
Asked to dish out an advice to aspiring models, Melanie had this to say: “I hope you will learn the tradition and culture, and be a Filipino… you have to love the culture of the Filipino.”
Meanwhile, another beauty queen striving to make a name for herself is Maya Celeste Padillo Olesen, the Danish-Filipina representative of Denmark in this year’s Miss World pageant in London.
In a separate interview posted on abs-cbnNEWS.com, Maya related how proud she is of her roots, having been born to a Danish father and a Filipina mother from Bohol.
“I'm very honored that I will be representing Denmark, and I think that it's great that I'm half-Danish, half-Filipina because Denmark is also a country which is a mixture of ethnic Danish and immigrants so I believe I represent the best part of Denmark,” said Maya, whose family migrated to Denmark when she was three.
Apart from Maya, there are three other candidates with Filipino blood who would vie for the Miss World crown, namely, Filipina-American Siera Robertson (Miss World-Guam), former “Pinoy Big Brother” celebrity housemate, Filipina-Canadian Riza Santos (Miss World-Canada), and Gwendolyn Ruais (Miss World-Philippines). The abs-cbnNEWS.com report noted that this is the first time the said pageant would have four beauty queens with Filipino lineage in its lineup of candidates.
