Tropical depression ‘Onyok’ to become a storm

Tropical depression “Onyok” is expected to intensify into a storm within the next 24 hours, weather bureau PAGASA said on Tuesday.

PAGASA officer-in-charge and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul said the tropical depression, last spotted 1,170 kilometers (kms) east northeast of Basco, Batanes, is expected to gain strength within the next 24 hours and stay within the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) until Thursday.

Yumul said Onyok was moving slowly at 7 kilometers per hour (kph) in a westward direction. Onyok was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center.

He added that once Onyok becomes a storm, it will strengthen the southwest monsoon (habagat) as it moves closer to southwest Japan. This weather system will bring rains over the National Capital Region, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Baguio, Zambales and Bataan.

Yumul also warned of possible landslides and flash floods.

Meanwhile, Visayas and Mindanao will also experience scattered rains brought about by the convergence of southwest and northwest winds.
