Supsup leads in 2 'Miss U' surveys

One day before the anticipated staging of the 60th Miss Universe beauty contest, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup topped the two unofficial surveys on favorite candidates for the most prestigious beauty contest in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In the survey sponsored by Telemundo Network, an American network broadcast in Spanish, Supsup led the Latina-dominated poll with 1,993,948 votes.

She was followed by Miss Venezuela with 1,923,475; Miss Mexico, 1,409,775; Miss Dominican Republic, 1,302,212; and Miss Ecuador with 1,172,196.

She also topped a similar survey conducted by Missosology, a Web site on beauty pageants.

But the most awaited survey is the global fan vote organized by the Miss Universe Organization (MUO).

The winner in the fan vote will automatically advance to the semis tomorrow.

It will be the first time that 16 candidates will be selected for the semis.

During the preliminary show, the Top 15 has been selected by preliminary judges.

The results will be announced tomorrow. A total of 89 contestants are competing in the pageant.

This will be the first time that the beauty contest is held in Brazil.

At the preliminary competition held recently, Miss Sweden Ronnia Fornstedt won the title Miss Photogenic, while Miss Montenegro Nikolina Loncar was chosen as Miss Congeniality.

This year, no award on Best in National Costume was given.

This developed after the MUO has announced a global partnership with Operation Smile, which cares for children born with clefts.

“Miss Universe and the international reigning titleholders are caring, compassionate women who are leveraging their incredible influence to give a voice to these children around the world suffering from clefts, who are often not heard,” said Dr. Bill Magee, co-founder and executive chairman of Operation Smile.

“It is only through the generosity of our supporters like the Miss Universe Organization that we are able to give these children their smiles and a world of hope,” Magee added.

Apart from Supsup, reigning Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete, along with Miss Universe Brasil Priscila Machado, Miss China Universe Lou Zilin, and Miss Universe Venezuela Vanessa Gonçalves recently volunteered on an Operation Smile medical mission in Sào Paulo to meet with the children and families affected by severe cleft conditions.

Earlier, days before the pageant, controversies rocked this year’s beauty competition after organizers reprimanded Miss Colombia for allegedly not wearing underpants during personal appearances and returned official swimsuit bikini bottoms to the designer that were deemed too sexy for the televised pageant.

Fox News reported that Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo, 22, donned short skirts sans underwear when they made the rounds during personal appearances for the most prestigious beauty pageant.
