Sports Unlimited: Beach games with the Azkals

Sports Unlimited and The Azkals continued their fun competition in Misibis Bay Resort in Cagraray Island, Bacacay, Albay.

Earlier, Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay Team won the go-kart relay, making Dyan and Marc’s group ahead by one point in the competition. They decided to carry on their duel at the beach.

The first game was the aqua duct. The goal of the game is to fill up water inside the pail. But the catch is that the players can only get water using their shirts, then take it off to squeeze the water to their team’s bucket. They all had to race back and forth to wet their shirts more.

At first, Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay team was leading. They only had to squeeze a tiny inch more to top it to the brim. Marc and Dyan thought that they could easily win this game but the Azkals were so fast on their last run, that they beat Sports Unlimited by a few seconds.

SU Team was more confident on the next game. Their teammates were none other than the recreation gurus of Misibis-- Jeff and Arly. This duo is already a powerhouse team. Some of the Azkals, meanwhile, were first time kayakers.

The Azkals may be competitive but Dyan and Marc badly wanted to get even. They paddled really hard from start to finish. The Azkals, on the other hand, had a hard time getting their acts together on the kayak. Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay Team finished the relay by a huge advantage, making their team lead by 1 point.

Both teams were excited to face off for the next game: kadang kadang. Pinoys who grew up in the province maybe familiar with this game. Kadang kadang, also called the coconut stilts race, is a pinoy parlor game where all members must line up and walk as one, using wooden planks.

Before the game proper, each team practiced walking as one team. At first, it was hard to take even a single step. But little by little, they got the hang of their planks.

Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay Team had a different strategy. Since it was hard to get all four members on board their planks, they thought of carrying Matthew so they could walk easier and faster.

The Azkals were hilariously unsuccessful on their first attempt. They even have their own beat but they kept on losing their balance. Sports Unlimited group, on the other hand, was marching as one team. Marc was assigned as the barker of their team and he got them moving in synch. Now the score is three for Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay Team and one for the Azkals.

Their next match was a modified balloon bursting game. Each member had to blow and tie the balloon, run to the other side, burst the balloon, then go back to the starting line for the next one.

They were all fast but the Azkals were more resourceful. They got shells as their secret weapons to easily pop their balloons. The score: 3 for Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay and 2 for Azkals.

The last game was a make-or-break for both teams. The sili challenge was easy—one member of each team must dig his face into a plate of flour to find the chili. As they say, when you’re in Bicol, you gotta savor its famed spice. Nate and Marc had to get their taste of Bicol as fast as they could for their respective teams.

Nate dipped his face flat on the plate while searching for the red treasure. Meanwhile, Marc had a slightly different strategy in mind. He bit the tip of the plate so he could spill the flour faster. But alas, Marc’s strategy made the hunt even harder! Nate, however, was able to find the prize with an accidental bite. Though the Azkals won the game, Nate’s tongue was burning that he had to head to the waters fast.

Both teams were tied on the last game that they were forced to play a tiebreaker game. Which game? Only the Azkals knew!

The Azkals weren’t called the Azkals for nothing. They live and breathe football so Marc and Dyan didn’t argue with them when they dared Sports Unlimited for some football drills.

Sports Unlimited, except for Matthew, has zero football background but they were still up for the challenge. Their opponents, on the other hand, have three of our country’s best football players. Ace and Chad aren’t really football professionals but their team mates clearly have the football flair even at the beach. This time, Sports Unlimited-Misibis Bay team had to submit, making The Azkals the champs of their beach games.

Dyan and Marc’s team may have lost but they were told that the losing team will get a special prize. At first sight, the reward looked like strawberry ice cream but after a spoonful of taste, they all found out that it was chili ice cream. The Azkals were curious that they also sampled Sports Unlimited’s prize.

Win or lose, Dyan, Matthew and Marc loved their Misibis Bay adventures. They didn’t just get the best taste of the beach but they also experienced intense competition and the best times with their equally competitive and fun team-- the Azkals! September 17, 2011.
