Pacman to run for VP
Eight-division world champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao will
be hanging his boxing gloves soon in order to focus on his political
career.
In a taped interview at the Mexico leg of his and rival Juan Manuel
Marquez’s World Press Tour aired on “Unang Hirit” on Sept. 9, Pacquiao
announced that he will run for vice president in the 2016 presidential
elections.
According to the same report, however, the solon will first attempt
to run for the gubernatorial seat of Sarangani in the 2013 midterm
elections.
Pacquiao’s first foray into politics was in 2007, when he ran for and
lost the congressional seat of South Cotabato’s first district to
incumbent General Santos City Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao and Marquez recently wrapped up their World Press
Tour at Mexico City’s Monumento a la RevoluciĆ³n. The tour kicked off in
Manila on Sept. 3, then went to New York (Sept. 6) and Los Angeles
(Sept. 7) before culminating in Marquez’s motherland in front of
thousands of people.
An article on boricuaboxing.com on Thursday placed
the Mexican crowd estimate at more than 30,000.
More, the same “UH” report mentioned that the boxers’ fans were in a
frenzy to have their boxing gloves and shirts signed during the
motorcade.
“Thank you to all the fans and the media and press, and of course to
all the Filipinos who are here. Muchos gracias,” Pacquiao told the
Mexican press and public.
“I am sure that this third fight will be the best of all of the fight,” Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said.
After the press tour, Pacquiao and Marquez will be heading back to their home bases to continue their respective trainings.
The Pacquiao-Marquez 3 bout is slated on Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand in
Las Vegas, Nevada. The two fighters will vie for the WBO Welterweight
title currently being held by Pacquiao.
