All-4-One, Color Me Badd relive Michael Jackson in Manila concert
R&B groups All-4-One and Color Me Badd of the ’90s have
maintained their longevity as well as a loyal fan base because of their
distinct sound with “soul.”
The groups’ double billed Manila concert held at Smart Araneta
Coliseum Sept. 7 combined Color Me Badd’s Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderon
and Kevin Thornton (disbanded in 2000 but were reunited in 2010 minus
Sam Watters) and All-4-One’s Jamie Jones, Delious Kennedy, Alfred
Nevarez, and Tony Borowiak.
Keeping the ’90s feel solid were music videos of the groups’ hits in
the background. Even if Color Me Badd lead singer Abrams did not quite
look like his ’90s self after having gained some pounds over the years,
girls in the front row still screamed each time he made an appearance.
All-4-One, on the other hand, still has their best shot with tag-team vocalists Jones and Kennedy.
Starting out the show, Color Me Badd hit it with “All 4 Love,”
followed by All-4-One’s “I Can Love You Like That,” “I Turn To You”
(yes, the song popularized by Christina Aguilera in 1998 was originally
recorded by the group in 1996) and “Someday” (the title single from the
Disney animated feature “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”).
Remembering MJ
One of the highlights of the show was the groups’ joining
together for what they called a tribute to the late King of Pop Michael
Jackson. They started out with “Gone Too Soon” to more of MJ hits “Black
Or White,” “Bad,” “Beat It,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Scream,” and
“Billy Jean.”
Addressing the audience, the boys pointed out that one of the reasons
they remained intact through the years is because they all “loved doing
a capellas.”
The groups also commended great talents throughout the
Philippines. “There are lots of talents in the Philippines. You know
why? Because you have soul,” Jones said.
“Astig! Maraming salamat Philippines! We love you!” quipped Thornton.
Then the a capella showdown went on with Color Me Badd delivering
“Hush, Somebody’s Calling My Neme” versus All-4-One’s “Bridge Over
Troubled Water” and “So Much In Love.”
Considering that the venue wasn’t that packed, the energy was
nonetheless palpable as the Big Dome crowd gamely engaged the groups’
hits, such as Color Me Badd’s “I Adore Mi Amor” and “I Wanna Sex You
Up.”
Not to be missed was the “anthem” that night, All-4-One’s biggest single “I Swear,” which sent the audience waving their hands.
Remember that the Grammy- winning song of 1995 even deserved a Tagalog version, “Sumpa Ko” by Quamo.
The two-hour show concluded with a stage collaboration of another MJ hit “Man In The Mirror.”
(The last leg of the twinbill will be held in La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City on Sept. 12.)
