Independence Day celebration kicks off in Cavite

The Philippine Independence Day celebration kicked off early this morning at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, where the country’s independence was first declared 113 years ago.

The opening ceremony was attended by President Benigno S. Aquino III, Cavite Governor Juanito Victor Remulla Jr., Cavite 1st District Representative Joseph Abaya, Cavite Historical Society President Cesar Virata, and various other dignitaries and members of the diplomatic corps.

Aquino officially opened the ceremony with the raising of the Philippine flag and the singing of the National Anthem.

The President also laid a wreath of flowers on Emilio Aguinaldo’s grave.

In his first Independence Day speech as president, Aquino said that the country is fighting a different opponent now.
