China search for next Yao


Washington Wizard forward Yi Jianlian has emerged as China’s main man in the post-Yao Ming era, leading his country to a 15th Asian championship with a series of formidable performances.
But the 23-year-old is not the only player that has taken the opportunity to seize a slice of the spotlight after Houston Rocket Yao, a hero to hundreds of millions of basketball-mad Chinese, announced his retirement in July.
Besides anchoring Team China on both ends of the floor, Yi calmly knocked down the winning free throw with 28 seconds left in the Asian final on Sunday against Jordan, sending the passionate home town crowd in Wuhan into a frenzy.

Chinese great Yao Ming retires from basketball

Yao Ming has made it official Wednesday, telling a packed news conference in his hometown that a series of foot and leg injuries have forced him to retire from basketball.

"I will formally end my career," said Yao, the 7-fooot-6 center who became a household name in China before starting his NBA career with the Houston Rockets as the top draft pick in 2002.

Yao Ming is Retiring from NBA

Yao Ming is keeping fans in suspense regarding his career plans for a few more days.

The 30-year-old Chinese basketball star was rumored to have decided to retire last week, with Yahoo Sports, citing NBA league sources, reporting that the 7-foot-6-inch center was calling it quits after nine seasons.
