A growing number of governments are seeking to deprive their citizens the last of their freedoms and rights. These rulers — some duly elected by their peoples, others foisted upon unwilling but fearful populace — are either chipping ever gradually at or drastically removing their people’s right to unfettered access to the Internet. Some of them cite security issues, as most rulers afraid of their people often do, as their main reason for putting in place viselike grip and controls on their respective corners of the online world. Most of them install firewalls designed to keep their citizens from accessing the larger part of the Internet that citizens of other more enlightened countries enjoy and often take for granted.

Jessica Sanchez, Manny Pacquiao Top Google Most-searched List
"American Idol" Finalist Jessica Sanchez and pugilist Manny Pacquiao were among celebrities that made it to Google Philippine's most-searched list from February to September this year.
Search for Sanchez' name surged last May after she lost to eventual "AI" champ, Phillip Phillips. Similarly, search for Pacquaio's name jacked up when he lost to American boxer Timothy Bradley.

Google’s Nexus Challenges Apple’s iPad
Google, Inc. will sell its first tablet from mid-July for $199, hoping to replicate its smartphone success in a hotly contested market now dominated by Amazon.com, Inc.'s Kindle Fire and Apple, Inc.'s iPad.
The "Nexus 7" tablet, built by and co-branded with Taiwan's Asus, was one of several gadgets unveiled at its annual developers' conference on Wednesday, as the Internet search and advertising leader dips its toe into the intensively competitive consumer arena.

Websites on 'blackout'; Yahoo founder quits
Wikipedia went dark, Google blotted out its logo, and other popular websites planned protests on Wednesday to voice concern over legislation in the US Congress intended to crack down on online piracy.
As this developed, Yahoo, Inc., co-founder Jerry Yang quit the company he started in 1995, appeasing shareholders who had blasted the Internet pioneer for pursuing an ineffective personal vision and impeding investment deals that could have transformed the struggling company.

Google lawyer slams Apple, Microsoft over patents
The Android logo is displayed during a press event at Google headquarters. Google is currently being sued by software giant Oracle over technology used in its Android smartphone operating system.
Google's top lawyer accused Apple, Oracle, Microsoft and other companies of using "bogus patents" to wage a campaign against the Internet giant's Android mobile platform.
Google's Most Expensive Ad Keywords
Advertising accounts for 97% of Google’s revenue; the search giant makes more than US$32 billion a month from this revenue stream, and the number continues to climb.
Of these ad revenues, 70% comprise of 20 keyword categories. Companies have to bid for these categories for their ads to appear when a user searches for a related term on Google.

Google is retiring 'Picasa' and 'Blogger'
Picasa and Blogger, as you know them, are biting the dust.
Google is retiring the two services – well, they're not retiring them so much as renaming them. Yup, say hello to “Google Photos” and “Google Blogs.” Mashable has reported that several other Google services may also get the renaming axe, but YouTube will be immune during this transition period.

Google Launches Chrome PCs
Laptop computers using Google's Chrome operating system will go on sale in June, as the world's No. 1 Internet search engine challenges Microsoft Corp and Apple on their home turf.
The new Web-centric PCs, made by Samsung and Acer Inc, are Google's latest attempt to change how consumers and companies use their computers.
The bare-bones operating system is essentially a web browser that steers users to use applications like email and spreadsheets directly on the web, instead of storing software such as Outlook or Word directly on PCs.

Google has released a new TV commercial called ‘Dear Sophie’ which shows a father chronicling the life of his daughter by sending email notes, photos and videos of her as she grows up. The TVc promotes Chrome complete with sentimental music and snappy visuals.

Google to Launch Online Music Service
Internet giant Google could launch an online music service as early as Tuesday to rival Amazon's "cloud" service, which allows users to store digital music online, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing unnamed sources, the neswspaper said on Monday that Google, like Amazon, has yet to secure licenses from the major record companies, and would limit users to a "streaming mode" to prevent piracy.

Google Introduces Background Send to Gmail
Google today introduced a new feature to Gmail that allows emails to be sent in the background while you use other parts of the app.
As Google points out in their announcement, waiting for an email to send can take a few seconds, and if you’re a heavy Gmail user, that’s a fair bit of time each day. Background Send dumps you back into your inbox while the process is completed out of sight.

Facebook is Now More Popular than Google
Facebook surpassed Google for the first time as the most visited website in the United States for most of 2010.
The stats say that Facebook.com accounted for 8.93 per cent of all US internet traffic and for the first time picked up top spot ahead of the Big G which managed a total of 7.19 per cent for Google.com.
