Schools To Open June 4

The Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that the opening of classes for the SY 2012-2013 is on Monday, June 4.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro, through DepEd Order No. 26 series of 2012, released to all Undersecretaries, Assistant Secretaries, Bureau Directors, Directors of Services, Centers and Heads of Units, Regional Directors, Schools Division/City Superintendents, and Heads of Public and Private Elementary and Secondary Schools announced the schedule of opening of classes through the official School Calendar For School Year SY 2012-2013.

Luistro said that the release of the calendar is “in line with the mainstreaming of the reforms in basic education.” Aside from opening of classes, the calendar also indicated that the last day shall be on Friday, March 22, 2013 with a total of 200 school days required.

“This school calendar aims to synchronize all the core events and teaching-learning activities in order to maximize the use of the required 200 school days for the SY2012-2013 which include 180 days to be used for non-negotiable teacher-pupils/students contact time and the five days In-Service Training (INSET) break and parent-teacher conference,” Luistro said.

Private schools, he explained, may deviate from this School Calendar. “However, they shall not start their classes earlier that June 4 and not later that the last day of August.” This, he said, is provided in Republic Act (RA) No. 7797 entitled “An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from 200 days To Not More than 220 Class Days.”

“Private schools are required to notify the appropriate/respective DepEd Office in advance regarding any deviation,” Luistro stressed.

The DepEd chief added that specific guidelines are provided by DepEd to enable the schools to implement the school events and activities effectively and efficiently. “The regional and division offices (ROs/DOs) shall provide support to the schools especially in the areas of instruction and progress monitoring and evaluation.”

Luistro also said that schools may observe national and local celebrations or activities and holidays other than stated by DepEd provided that the total number of school days is maintained and make-up classes shall be conducted to compensate for the school days spent for the said activities.

 

“In this regard, the RO may issue a regional school calendar to reflect their respective concerns, provided that the total number of school days is not compromised,” he said. 

 

Luistro also added that the ROs shall submit the Consolidated Report on the Actual Number of School Days with activities held in every school in its different school divisions under its jurisdiction not later than two weeks after the end of the school year. 

 

The report, Luistro said, shall include recommendations on how the policy on meeting the required number of school days can be strengthened and submit this report to the Office of the Undersecretary for Programs and Projects. 

 

Other school events and activities included in the calendar is the Brigada Eskwela which will start on May 21 to 26. Summer classes for kindergarten started last April 10 to June 5 while the summer classes for students who have dropped out of school and for other out-of-school youths started in April 16 to May 28.
