Cebu Dancing Inmates to be Featured in British Travel Documentary

The popularity of the Cebu dancing inmates continues to surge worldwide as it is set to be featured in the UK travel documentary series, “It’s A Woman’s World.”

The inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) performed their routine before the show’s crew in a drizzly May 6 afternoon, as reported by Radio dzBB and later picked up by GMANews.TV.

They danced to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson's “They Don’t Care About Us,” Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are,” and “Hot Hot Hot.”

Camilla Andersen, director and presenter of the documentary, lauded the inmates, telling Sun Star Cebu in an interview, “I have been to 60 countries and this has been the most incredible thing I’ve seen.”
Having heard about the world-renowned dancing inmates, Andersen related that they have communicated with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

“I think this is a really good idea,” Andersen noted, describing the story of the dancing inmates as an inspiring one. “Finding a place that is really dark, like a prison, but with so much hope inside is a really great story.

“I think there are some people who think it’s strange because the prisoners dance but I think anything that you can do to improve the morale of someone in prison means less chances for them to offend the law again," Andersen said.

The documentary will be aired beginning October in The Travel Channel International, which Andersen said has more than 60 million viewers in over 100 countries.

According to the "It's A Woman's World" Facebook fan page, the show traveled to four exotic countries including the Philippines to show not only the “best each country has to offer," but more so, to present the “interesting and inspiring local women they meet.”

An album called “Philippines” has also been uploaded in the show's Facebook page, which contains photos of a number of esteemed Filipinas that may well be featured in the British documentary such as prima ballerina Liza Macuja-Elizalde, acclaimed actress and Batangas governor Vilma Santos, Miss Universe Fourth Runner-Up and “Umagang Kay Ganda” host Maria Venus Raj, and world bowling champ Olivia “Bong” Coo.

Photos of Suprema Isabel Suarez, a spiritual leader from Mt. Banahaw, and bloggers Dine Racoma and Noemi Lardizabal-Dado (of Filipinaimages.com) are also included in the album.
The Cebu Dancing Inmates rose to fame back in 2007 with their performance of Jackson’s “Thriller,” which generated millions of views on YouTube and featured in both local and international news organizations.

They were also featured in TIME magazine’s YouTube’s 50 Best Videos in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the video-sharing site.
