Breast Cancer, A Curable Disease


At present, the Philippines has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Southeast Asia, and the ninth highest in the world. With about 10,000 new cases discovered every year, the disease is already the most common form of cancer among Filipinos, having overtaken lung cancer in recent years. It accounts for 16% of all reported cancer cases in the country and nearly 30% of all female cancers.

New Breast Cancer Therapy Tied to More Complications


Women about to have breast cancer surgery may want to pay extra attention to the radiation treatment they could be offered afterward.
A new study shows a new and increasingly popular treatment called brachytherapy is tied to more wound and skin complications than the standard radiation technique.
Yet as many as one in six women on Medicare, the government's health insurance program for people over 65, end up getting the new therapy following breast-conserving surgery, researchers found.

WBO names Pacquiao ‘Fighter of the Decade’


Even if he has only fought under the World Boxing Organization (WBO) four times, the Puerto Rico-based governing body yesterday named the Filipino superstar and ex-welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao as its Fighter of the Decade during the ongoing 25th WBO convention in Florida.
Pacquiao only became a WBO champion in late-2009 after he beat Miguel Cotto for the welterweight title. He defended it successfully twice against Shane Mosley of the US and Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico before losing it to Tim Bradley last June on a controversial split decision.

Sustaining The Philippine Animation Industry


Animation is one of the industries expected to earn a two-digit growth in the next few years. International research firm MarketsandMarkets projects that the animation and gaming market will hit $242.93 billion in 2016 from 2010’s $122.20—that’s a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.94 percent. Here in the Philippines, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) considers animation as ‘one of the most promising sectors in the IT-BPO industry’ (globally, the Philippines is number one in voice services provider and number two in non-voice, complex services). Mobile Phone Use Linked To Tumor


Italy’s supreme court has upheld a ruling that said there was a link between a business executive’s brain tumor and his heavy mobile phone usage, potentially opening the door to further legal claims.
The court’s decision flies in the face of much scientific opinion, which generally says there is not enough evidence to declare a link between mobile phone use and diseases such as cancer and some experts said the Italian ruling should not be used to draw wider conclusions about the subject.

Korean rapper Psy's viral hit "Gangnam Style" has achieved another milestone, getting 1 million downloads and 1 million on-demand streams in the US, according to Billboard.
Billboard.com says based on this week's Digital Songs chart, "Gangnam Style" has attained the feat.
"Another honor for PSY: With its latest sales frame, 'Style' passes 1 million in downloads sold to date," according to the chart although "Gangnam Style" slipped in the Digital Songs ranking from No. 2 last week to No. 4 this week.

Tomatoes Can Lower Stroke Risk – Study


Eating tomatoes can dramatically reduce the risk of having a stroke, according to a new study out Monday that provided more support for diets rich in fruits and vegetables.
The key factor appears to be the powerful antioxident lycopene, according to the Finnish study published in the Neurology journal.
The research -- based on data from more than 1,000 middle-aged men, followed for an average of 12 years -- indicates that people with the highest levels of lycopene in their blood have a 55 percent lower chance of suffering a stroke.

US Man Dies After Cockroach-Eating Contest


A US man died after winning a cockroach and worm eating contest at a Florida reptile house over the weekend, police said.
Edward Archbold, 32, had eaten several dozen roaches and worms Friday as part of the contest to win an exotic python.
He later began vomiting and was picked up by an ambulance in front of the shop, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Direk Marilu Diaz-Abaya dies at 57


Multi-awarded film director Marilu Diaz-Abaya succumbed to cardiac pulmonary arrest brought about by her seven-year battle with breast cancer at 6:40 p.m. yesterday at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City. She was 57.
Widely considered as the premiere female director of the country, Diaz-Abaya is best remembered for her take on 2007’s “José Rizal,” the biopic starting Cesar Montano.
She was also the mother of musician and actor Marc Abaya, who told local media recently that his mother’s cancer had regressed.

KZ Tandingan Scores 1st ‘X Factor PHL’ Title


Jazz singer KZ Tandingan was named first ever winner of the  “X Factor Philippines” Sunday during the show’s finale episode held at the PAGCOR theater.

Government Assaults On Online Freedom


A growing number of governments are seeking to deprive their citizens the last of their freedoms and rights. These rulers — some duly elected by their peoples, others foisted upon unwilling but fearful populace — are either chipping ever gradually at or drastically removing their people’s right to unfettered access to the Internet. Some of them cite security issues, as most rulers afraid of their people often do, as their main reason for putting in place viselike grip and controls on their respective corners of the online world. Most of them install firewalls designed to keep their citizens from accessing the larger part of the Internet that citizens of other more enlightened countries enjoy and often take for granted.
